📢 Changes to accounts filings will come into effect on 1 April 2028.

An overview of what’s changing from 1 April 2028:

- all companies must file accounts digitally via software (iXBRL format)
- small companies and micro entities will need to file profit and loss accounts, but can opt-out of this being displayed on the public register – we’ll share details of the opt-out route in due course
- companies will no longer be able to file abridged accounts
- smaller technical changes, including updates to audit exemptions and accounting reference periods

We're contacting all registered email addresses between 16 and 18 June 2026 with further information about the changes.

🖌️ Self Assessment: early filing helps clients plan without paying early. HMRC is encouraging anyone who needs to complete a Self Assessment tax return for the 2025 to 2026 tax year to file early, rather than waiting until the 31 January 2027 online filing deadline.

This is a useful message for members to share with self-employed clients, landlords and individuals with untaxed income. Filing early does not mean paying early. The payment deadline remains 31 January 2027, but early filing gives clients more time to understand what they owe, plan their cash flow and avoid the pressure that often builds close to the January deadline.

👉 HMRC has said that more than 290,000 people submitted their 2025 to 2026 Self Assessment tax return in the first week of the financial year. Members may wish to use this as a simple behavioural prompt when speaking to clients. The earlier a return is prepared, the easier it is to deal with missing records, queries and payment planning.

Who is going to help the unsupported business owners who are mandated to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax in April 2027 and April 2028?
I've heard lots of Accountants just won't have the time to move from working with their clients at year end to quarterly or even monthly.
It's time to get your separate bsnk account and software choices made as soon as possible and get the support now rather than panicking when you have no choice in the relevant April when professionals will be busy with their current clients.

Top 5 errors I see from sole traders doing their own bookkeeping

Error 1: Classifying the money they take from the business as Wages
Result: Business expenses too high meaning not enough tax paid

Error 2: Not entering the full amount of sales when card payment fees have been taken out before deposit in bank
Result: Business income too low and VAT threshold registration delayed incorrectly

Error 3: Classifying moving money from one bank account to another as an Expense when it should be a Transfer
Result: Business expenses too high meaning not enough tax paid

Error 4: Not adding any expenses paid from a personal bank account or cash
Result: Business expenses too low meaning too much tax paid

Error 5: Not adding their Use of Home office expenses
Result: Business expenses too low meaning tax paid too high

If you are making any or all of these errors book some training with Purple Bookkeeping and I can show you the correct entries to use.
