The Information Commission’s Office (ICO) has launched its Data Protection Essentials training for SMEs and sole traders, which provides free advice to help small firms develop good data handling practices. The training, which FSB fed into, covers a range of essential topics, including tips on streamlining customer data collection and avoiding risks to confidentiality.

Erdem Volkan, founder of LetCompliance, says: “Landlords are being told to pick software from HMRC’s list, and most will look at whether it sends the quarterly updates. The tax return line matters just as much.

“A third of the products on the list cannot yet finish the year, so a landlord choosing today should check that line, and the other income they need to report, before they sign up.”

New client signed up today who has 26 sheep. If you didn't know I used to have 6 rescue sheep that I kept for 3 years. I learned to shear them and give vaccines. So much fun!

Busy day today - off to get a self assessment signed and go through all the detail with a new landlord client in Melksham then off to Tytherington Lucas to meet a potential new client for catch up bookkeeping. Might sneak in a pub lunch in between.

“From September 2026, HMRC will begin signing up customers who should be using MTD for the 2026 to 2027 tax year but have not yet done so, helping them meet their requirements.

New Property Registration Service for all landlords starting from Dec 2026

The table below shows the deadlines for landlords to register rental properties in England, ranging from 14 March to 14 November 2027. Once the deadline has passed for a property’s region, the landlord and any letting agent will need to ensure the unique landlord and property identifiers are included on adverts.

The deadlines are based on the location of the property, and not where the landlord lives. Landlords can choose to register properties earlier.
