๐ Its coming up to holiday season... โ๏ธHave you ever heard of a GHIC or EHIC? ๐ค
If you're planning a trip to Europe this year, it's worth knowing about these important travel essentials.
Many people think a GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) or EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) replaces travel insurance... but that's not the case. In fact, you really need BOTH.
โ
Your GHIC/EHIC
Gives you access to medically necessary state healthcare in participating European countries, just like a local resident.
Makes it easier to receive treatment abroad.
However, it does not cover private medical treatment, mountain rescue, or getting you back to the UK if you become seriously ill or injured.
โ
Your Travel Insurance
Covers the gaps left by a GHIC/EHIC.
Can pay for emergency private treatment and medical transport, including air ambulances and repatriation.
Also protects you against cancellations, lost luggage, delayed travel, and stolen passports.
โ ๏ธ Did you know? Many travel insurance policies require you to have a valid GHIC. If you need medical treatment abroad and don't have one, your insurer may charge an additional excess.
๐ก A GHIC is completely FREE to apply for. Be careful of unofficial websites that charge a fee โ always apply through the NHS Overseas Healthcare Services.
Before your next European holiday, make sure you've got both your GHIC and the right travel insurance in place. It's worth noting that GHIC replace EHIC. So when looking to apply, make sure you're searching for the right thing.
๐ Have you already got a GHIC, or is this the first time you've heard of it? Let me know in the comments!
