Story Behind Loneliness UK ( CIC )

Michael Helps is a local community organiser from Burnley, Lancashire, who founded Loneliness UK—a free letter-writing service dedicated to combating social isolation and loneliness by connecting people through traditional pen-pal mail.📝

Background and Mission

The Inspiration: Michael was moved to act after visiting a hospital in 2014, where he noticed an elderly woman sitting entirely alone while waiting for medical results. Encouraged by his mother, Sheila, he decided to launch an initiative to ensure isolated individuals always have someone to listen to.

Evolution of the Project: Originally established under the name Old and Proud to support elderly individuals, the initiative later expanded and rebranded as Loneliness UK to support anyone of any age experiencing isolation.

How the Service Works Writing In:

Anyone feeling lonely or isolated can write a physical letter, email or social media, detailing their day, thoughts, or feelings.
Guaranteed Reply: Michael personally reads the incoming letters and write back to every person, ensuring that those reaching out know they are not alone.
