Today is and it's a reminder of why local-level action really matters.

Every day, businesses and store teams across the UK rely on Neighbourly to redirect surplus food to charities and community groups in their area. To date, that's added up to over 330 million meals reaching people who need them most.

Our corporate partners provide crucial aid to communities all over the UK through their giving programmes.

Through Neighbourly, Sainsbury’s community grants have donated over £5 million to more than 2,300 charities and local community organisations since 2021. Funding local initiatives that tackle food poverty and help make good food more accessible to those who need it most.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2026 is almost over - but for the mental health charities in the Neighbourly network and beyond, the work never stops.

This year's theme was action, and that's something these causes embody every single day. From frontline crisis support to long-term community wellbeing projects, they show up for people regardless of what's trending.

As the week closes, we want to celebrate them, and remind supporters that the opportunity to take action doesn't end on Sunday. Funding, volunteer time, surplus products - every contribution makes a difference to the causes doing this vital work.

Teamwork and a powerful shared purpose are what successful volunteering days are all about! 👏

We loved hearing about the success of the volunteering day the Gallagher team held with Mentalkhealth Sittingbourne, which benefits the users of their woodland

The day was made even better by inviting students from a local school also benefiting from the Gallagher Community Fund via the Neighbourly platform. 💰

Sarah Millan, Senior Business Analyst, perfectly sums up the spirit of the day: "It was so good for Gallagher employees to again make a difference to benefit the users of Mentalk Health Sittingbourne Woodland. Fantastic teamwork and great conversation around the campfire at the end of the day. Extra special this time as we had invited students from Five Acre Wood School".

We’re just over a week into May and it’s safe to say that peak volunteering season is upon us!

The spring and summer months bring better weather and longer days which means giving back to local communities and making an impact is easier.

Reflecting on last May, we saw a remarkable 71,000 people supported through the volunteering efforts of our corporate partners. Intact Insurance made its mark by delivering over 1,000 hours of invaluable volunteering support. This support helped to improve the facilities at local organisations and parks, provide critical upskilling training to charity volunteers and provide hot food to local people.

Today marks a very important day in our calendar.

Stop Food Waste Day is an opportunity to reflect on the transformation that donating surplus food can have on a community.

At Neighbourly, our dedicated charity network creates the foundation for everything we do.

One charity that perfectly exemplifies Neighbourly’s ethos is Maya's Community Support Centre. Maya and her team have been demonstrating what it means to transform lives through action since 2022, delivering over 449,240 meals and supporting 800 people weekly.

Maya’s Freeshop in Herne Bay, Kent is open 365 days a year and offers a wide range of food, as well as other support services, ensuring that the people they support are provided with a well-balanced meal every time they visit. The organisation collects from local supermarkets, turning food into fuel for the community and simultaneously reducing food waste.

Actions speak louder than words 🌍

Happy Earth Day!

At Neighbourly, we believe local action is the driving force of environmental change, and our partnership with Hays demonstrates exactly what is possible when corporate purpose meets community need.

Since the launch of Hays Gets Neighbourly, we’ve seen incredible levels of group and individual engagement in environmental volunteering, resulting in 252 dedicated events where 1,688 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into making a tangible difference. From litter picks and green space restoration to vital conservation and reuse projects, Hays colleagues have contributed a massive 7,989 hours to protecting our planet at a local level. These aren't just numbers; they represent a direct response to the real-world needs of the charities and community groups we support.

As we approach Hays’ seasonal volunteering peak next month, the momentum is only growing, with nearly 400 additional hours of environmental activity already on the horizon.

Thank you to every Hays volunteer for turning commitment into impact.
