๐Ÿšธ School safety must come first

With just days to go before the new school term begins, weโ€™re calling on South Gloucestershire Council to urgently repaint the school road markings outside St Michaelโ€™s Primary School.

These markings are an important part of keeping children safe when arriving at and leaving school, while also providing motorists with clear guidance around the school entrance.

We want to see these markings repainted before the new term starts โ€” helping create a safer environment for children walking to school and for motorists using the road.

The situation at Stoke Lodge Playing Fields remains a matter of deep concern for many local residents. People are disappointed that they are unable to use this important open space and are calling for the restoration of public access.

Steve Smith said: โ€œCotham School has decided to ignore the public access clause in its lease and likewise the four public rights of way. Preventing residents from accessing their local green space is unacceptable.โ€

Sharon Scott added: โ€œItโ€™s very disappointing that the Council wonโ€™t enforce the lease or the public rights of way. We will continue to press for enforcement for the community.

The Downs are one of Bristolโ€™s most valued open spaces, enjoyed every day by residents, families, dog walkers, sports groups and visitors.

Following concerns raised by local residents and campaigning by community group Protect The Downs, Bristol City Council took legal action regarding people living in vehicles on and around The Downs. In April 2026, the Court granted an injunction covering these areas.

Since the injunction was introduced, the caravans have gone. However, residents remain concerned that several vans are still arriving and staying overnight, raising questions about enforcement and concerns that vans may gradually return.

The injunction is legally binding, and residents want to see it properly enforced.
Sharon Scott, Chair of Protect The Downs, has been working hard to keep pressure on the authorities. Sharon said: โ€œWe have worked hard with the community to see the injunction put in place. People are frustrated that vans are still arriving and staying overnight despite the restrictions. We are asking Bristol City Council and the relevant authorities to provide clarity on their enforcement plans and take action to protect The Downs for the whole community.โ€
