The Downs are one of Bristolโs most valued open spaces, enjoyed every day by residents, families, dog walkers, sports groups and visitors.
Following concerns raised by local residents and campaigning by community group Protect The Downs, Bristol City Council took legal action regarding people living in vehicles on and around The Downs. In April 2026, the Court granted an injunction covering these areas.
Since the injunction was introduced, the caravans have gone. However, residents remain concerned that several vans are still arriving and staying overnight, raising questions about enforcement and concerns that vans may gradually return.
The injunction is legally binding, and residents want to see it properly enforced.
Sharon Scott, Chair of Protect The Downs, has been working hard to keep pressure on the authorities. Sharon said: โWe have worked hard with the community to see the injunction put in place. People are frustrated that vans are still arriving and staying overnight despite the restrictions. We are asking Bristol City Council and the relevant authorities to provide clarity on their enforcement plans and take action to protect The Downs for the whole community.โ
