Does your pension have purpose? 🤔

New guidance set out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) looks at the next few years as being 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 to limit further warming to 1.5C 🔥. If exceeded, this will result in “unprecedented heatwaves, terrifying storms, and widespread water shortages" says United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

A 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 reduction in fossil fuels is needed.

A fresh study by Sustainable tech provider, Clarity AI, has found that only a small fraction (7%) of revenues from 31,000 equity funds that are often classified as green, contribute to mitigating climate change, which raises concerns about investors being misled by supposedly ‘green’ funds.

Globally, it found just 3.6% of revenues can be considered green.

Clarity AI head of product research & innovation Patricia Pina said:

"Reliable, transparent insights are at the heart of fact-based sustainable finance. They should become the norm in making informed decisions around ‘green' investing."

We recently sat down for an exclusive interview with the Daily Express to talk about .

Increased interest in sustainable pension investment has brought it’s own set of problems when it comes to identifying which funds are genuinely sustainable.

Investment data provider, Morningstar, recently dropped 1,200 funds from their sustainable list and “hundreds of thousands of pounds will have been invested in those funds and now the investors are finding out that they are not particularly sustainable after all.”

Andy Harris, TSPC's Commercial Director, goes on to describe that many fund managers have simply “rebadged” funds to jump on the ESG bandwagon. “In some cases, nothing’s changed within the funds. There’s no way of telling what’s changed. And yet they’ve been able to call it sustainable.”

“Even people with experience of investing with struggle with this one because it’s a pretty new concept. It’s incredibly subjective, there are no definitions, no rules.”

Andy urges people who are concerned about where their pensions are invested to seek out specialist advice. “Even without the sustainable badge, the task of consolidating pensions is an absolute nightmare.”

SAVERS are often tricked into thinking a pension fund is more sustainable than it really is.

But they can also be helpful. 💪

Seeing the commitments from various pension providers across the UK who are scrapping Russian exposure and the continued pressure on others to follow suit is what we want to see more of.

If you’re unsure of where your pensions are invested, please make it a priority to look into this now. You could unknowingly be supporting the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.
