Brighton & Hove’s bikeshare scheme has hit a huge milestone.

The number of journeys on the city’s Beryl Bikes has passed the one million mark.

Since the relaunch of the scheme with Beryl in in 2023:

🚴 more than 129,000 people have cycled over 2.8 million kilometres around the city
🚴 People hiring Beryl Bikes have spent more than 272,000 hours cycling
🚴 Palace Pier, Brighton Marina and Madeira Drive hubs the most popular.

An excellent scheme that offers benefits to all road users - work starts in the autumn!😊

Work on a new active travel scheme between Hove and Portslade is scheduled to begin later this year following the latest consultation stage.

Councillors have agreed to move forward with the scheme which would improve cycling, pedestrian and road infrastructure between Fourth Avenue and the city’s western boundary. It includes:

🚲 A separated two-way cycle lane
🚶 New pavements and bus stops
🛣️ Safer, better aligned crossings and junctions
♿ New loading bays and disabled parking bays

Last week we were invited to try the CityQ e-vehicles (with 4 wheels they must be e-quads rather than e-bikes?)
They have no direct link between the pedals and the wheels, but you do have to pedal to activate the motor and with a maximum speed of 25kph they are still classed as an e-bike.
They were very easy to get used to and felt like they were keeping up with city traffic with no problem.
There are different versions for carrying cargo (or how about a version modified to grit the cycle lanes during the winter?) but we were trying the passenger version for up to 3 people - how good would these be as a city centre alternative to the 'Car Club' cars and vans? Rent them by the hour - ideal for car free families who don't have the space to store a cargo bike but occasionally need to move more people or larger loads around the city! We think they could be a great addition Cllr Trevor Muten!
