As part of our Black History Month events, Holly Straker-Humphreys joined our colleagues and Board here in Bradford to share her story and challenge us to do more.

Her words, experience, and insight captured our attention. It reminded us of what it means to be genuine allies and authentic leaders. And that creating a barrier-free environment is what's needed to make a real impact for everyone who works here.

Want to know more about a career in Digital at YBS?

Who better to ask than one of our User Experience (UX) Managers, George? He took the time to tell us about his career so far.

Starting out as a UX Designer, he's been working on some exciting projects that make understanding financial services easier for our customers. He’s developed loads of new technical and leadership skills, including collaboration, problem-solving and facilitation, and now he manages a team of his own.

It's clear to see how much pride he takes in simplifying the complex world of financial services and making it more accessible.

He's gone from creating joyful experiences for our customers to doing the same for his team.

The power of conversation can’t be underestimated. At YBS, we create safe spaces where people can listen, learn, and have their questions answered without the fear of saying the wrong thing.
During this , we hosted several panel discussions focused on topics such as Removing the Fear and Everyday Inclusion. These sessions expanded our understanding of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I), encouraging openness and some truly powerful insight. They also provided our colleagues with practical advice on how to
play their part in sustaining our supportive culture.

It's these kinds of workshops that promote a feeling of real inclusion. And, in turn, this creates an environment where every individual, regardless of their background, feels empowered, confident and supported.

Our culture is all about creating an inclusive workplace. So, to get recognised for it with a silver accreditation by Inclusive Employers is a special moment for us.

It's a real testament to how every level of our organisation embraces diversity – creating a workplace that is inclusive of everyone, regardless of background or identity. Quite fitting as we celebrate , 2025.

To get here was more than a tick box exercise. It's a thorough process that sets high standards for how we put inclusion into action – from ally groups to clear policies, and everything in between.

Achieving silver first time is something we're very proud of. And we put it down to being a workplace where there is real belonging.

Reflecting on a week of listening, learning, and breaking the silence for this year’s Infertility Awareness Week
At the start of the month, we ran a series of educational and enlightening events for Infertility Awareness Week. We know it can be a difficult subject for colleagues to open up about. But, with the help of Fertility Network UK, as well as members from our Family Foundations group and Women’s Network, each session was a safe, supportive space for sharing and learning.

Through these events, we deepen our understanding of infertility and what those who experience it are going through – so we can do more to support them.

Around 20,000 employees. Over 200,000 evaluations. 500 top companies on the list – and we’re one of them!

To be specific, we were ranked 97th on the Financial Times list of the UK’s 500 best employers. And we’re so proud!

We’re the highest-ranked building society on the list, coming in the top 20 across the banking and finance sector overall.

Their independent survey asked around 20,000 employees for their opinions about their current employer, from working conditions and salary to opportunities for development. That means our peoples’ genuine opinions about working here are what earned us our place.

It’s incredible to see the work we put into building a great workplace with a supportive culture pay off. We’re excited to keep working and growing, and get that number 1 spot!
