☀️ Keeping pets cool during the heatwave ☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s a timely reminder that hot weather can be uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous for our pets. Here are a few key reminders for pet owners during a heatwave:
• Make sure pets always have access to fresh water and shade.
• Avoid walking dogs during the hottest part of the day — early morning or later evening is safest.
• Check pavements before walking: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws.
• Never leave pets in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans, even for a short time.
• Use cooling mats, fans, damp towels or pet pools to keep them nice and cool.
• For horses, ensure access to water, making their feed nice and sloppy, washing them down with cold water, shade and appropriate fly protection, and avoid unnecessary travel or hard exercise in the heat.
• Watch for signs of heat stress, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, 'wobbliness' or collapse — and seek veterinary advice urgently if concerned. Small actions can help keep animals safe, comfortable and protected during extreme temperatures.
