❕ More Workers to Qualify for Sick Pay Under Government’s “Making Work Pay” Plan ❕

Big changes are on the horizon for Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in April 2026, and they’re set to make a real difference for millions of workers across the UK. Under the government’s new “Making Work Pay” initiative, the Lower Earnings Limit for SSP is being scrapped — meaning more people will now receive financial support if they fall ill and can’t work.

This is expected to benefit an additional 1.3 million employees who were previously excluded simply because they didn’t earn enough. For many low-paid workers, this could bring a welcome layer of financial security and peace of mind.

What’s Changing? 🤔

Right now, employees must earn above a certain threshold (the Lower Earnings Limit) to qualify for SSP. If they don’t, they’re not entitled to any statutory sick pay — leaving many without support when they’re unwell.

From April 2026, that earnings threshold disappears. Whether someone earns £10 a week or £500, they’ll be eligible!

SSP will be calculated at 80% of the employee’s average weekly earnings, capped at a flat rate of £118.75 — whichever is lower.

Why It Matters 👉

This is more than just a policy tweak — it’s about treating workers fairly. Too many people have had to make the tough choice between getting paid or getting better. With the earnings limit gone, low-paid workers can recover without the added stress of lost income.

Employers will feel the impact too. With more staff qualifying for SSP, their costs might go up. But there’s a silver lining — SSP will now kick in from day one of sickness, rather than after a three-day wait. The hope is that by supporting employees early, we’ll see a drop in long-term sickness absence and a boost in overall workplace health.

Preparing Payroll Systems for SSP Changes ❕

⁉️ Here's what to consider:

Ensure your software is up to date so it no longer checks for minimum earnings before paying SSP.

Make sure SSP starts from day one of sick leave, not after three days.

Tell your team about the new rules, especially those who didn’t qualify before.

Plan for extra costs — low-paid staff will now get SSP, which could affect budgets.

Check everything works — test your system and speak to your payroll provider if needed.

👉 At Southern Payroll Solutions, we're here to make these SSP changes seamless. We’ll work closely with your business to ensure compliance, clarity, and confidence in your payroll processes — all with our signature personal touch.

🔐 HMRC Targets Security Firms Using Subcontractors: What You Need to Know

If your security company operates in the UK and relies on subcontracted personnel, HMRC’s latest campaign could impact you. The tax authority has issued compliance warnings to thousands of firms—especially those using subcontractors—to address employment status issues and tax mismanagement.

This guide breaks down what’s happening, who’s affected, and what your firm must do before 3 August 2025 to stay on the right side of the law.

🚨 Why HMRC Is Focused on the Security Sector

The security industry is under scrutiny for:

Incorrect employment classification: Many workers are labelled as self-employed when they operate like employees.

Fraudulent supply chains: Some intermediaries withhold PAYE and NICs but never pass them to HMRC.

Tax underpayments: Misclassification leads to lost Income Tax and NICs, hurting public revenue.

👥 Who’s Affected?

Security firms using subcontractors or third-party labour.

Agencies that supply security personnel.

Subcontractors working without formal employment assessments.

✅ What HMRC Expects You to Do by 3 August 2025

Verify PAYE Registration Subcontracted security workers who are under your control likely count as employees. Make sure PAYE and NICs are properly handled.

Ensure Full Tax Deductions Are Made Whether you pay operatives directly or through a third party, all taxes must be accounted for correctly under UK law.

Review Your Labour Supply Chain If an agency or umbrella company is involved, confirm they are fulfilling their PAYE responsibilities. You could be held liable if they aren’t.

🧠 Are Your Subcontractors Truly Self-Employed?

Use HMRC’s Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) tool to assess:

Who controls the work?

Who supplies tools and uniforms?

Can the worker send a substitute?

Does the worker bear financial risk?

If the tool determines they’re an employee, you must operate PAYE—regardless of how they’re paid.

⚠️ Risks of Non-Compliance

Failing to meet HMRC’s requirements may result in:

Unpaid tax bills

Financial penalties and interest

Damage to your firm’s reputation

Criminal charges in serious fraud cases

🛠️ Compliance Checklist

✅ Conduct regular employment status checks

✅ Save CEST results as evidence

✅ Verify tax compliance of agencies and intermediaries

✅ Keep detailed digital records

✅ Have Southern Payroll Solutions take the load off!

Contact Southern Payroll Solutions today to ensure you are getting your compliance right and to help you avoid steep penalties later. Take action before the 3 August 2025 deadline!

Attending the B2B Growth Expo – A Valuable Experience

Today I had the pleasure of attending the B2B Growth Expo in Bournemouth, and I’m truly inspired by the experience. I met a diverse group of dynamic and driven professionals, all united by a common goal: to grow their businesses through meaningful connections and collaboration.

The B2B Growth Hub offers a platform for networking, bringing together entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and industries. As someone who doesn’t naturally find it easy to “sell myself,” I appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. The conversations I had were genuine and encouraging, and I left with a wealth of advice and a strong list of new contacts.

The event also featured a fantastic line up of speakers—including the CEO of B2B Growth Hub—the speakers shared valuable insights on achieving success, embracing the future of AI, and refining your pitch to stand out.

On the topic of pitching, I also took part in my first speed networking session—a fast-paced and insightful experience that truly sharpened my messaging and helped me focus on what matters most when making an introduction.

In conclusion, events like these are a powerful reminder of the value of stepping outside your comfort zone. The B2B Growth Expo didn’t just provide opportunities to network—it offered the space to reflect, learn, and grow alongside others who are equally passionate about business and innovation.

I’m leaving today feeling more confident in how I present myself, and excited about the new connections I’ve made. A big thank you to the organisers and everyone I had the pleasure of speaking with.

If you're thinking of attending in future, I highly recommend it. You never know who you might meet—or what ideas might spark.

The Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Act 2023, which came into effect on April 6, 2025, provides new rights to leave and pay for parents of babies in neonatal care. Eligible employees can take up to a maximum of 12 weeks leave. This leave is in addition to other statutory parental leave entitlements.

Key aspects of the new rights:

Eligibility:
The leave applies to employees who are parents (including adoptive or surrogate parents) of a baby who has received or is receiving neonatal care, and their partner (if living with them).

Leave duration:
Eligible parents can take up to 12 weeks of leave, with one week of leave for every 7 consecutive days the baby is in neonatal care, up to the maximum of 12 weeks.

Pay:
Statutory Neonatal Care Pay is available, at either the statutory rate (£187.18 per week as of April 2025) or 90% of the employee's average weekly earnings, whichever is lower.

Employers:
Employers will be able to reclaim payments made to employees on neonatal care leave through a reduction in their national insurance contributions.

Minimum requirements:
The new rights apply to all employees, regardless of their length of service, and do not require any minimum service requirement.

Ensure your payroll systems and processes are fully aligned with the latest neonatal care entitlements.
