"Publicity Is the Oxygen of Terrorism" β Reno Omokri Sparks Debate Over Kidnap Crisis.
As Nigerians continue to express outrage over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, political commentator Reno Omokri has shared a controversial perspective that is generating intense discussions online.
According to Reno, many people believe that public campaigns, celebrity involvement, and global attention help pressure kidnappers and terrorists into releasing their victims. However, he argues that the opposite is often true.
Quoting former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, he wrote:
"Publicity is the oxygen of terrorism."
Reno argued that terrorist groups often crave publicity because fear and attention help them amplify their influence, attract recruits, and put pressure on governments.
Referring to the recent reactions surrounding the kidnapped Oyo schoolchildren, he suggested that excessive publicity may unintentionally increase the value of hostages in the eyes of their captors.
He also reflected on his involvement in the campaign for Leah Sharibu and referenced the global movement after the abduction of the Boko Haram Chibok schoolgirls.
According to him, security experts later advised that intense international attention can sometimes make rescue efforts more difficult because captors may become more determined to keep high-profile hostages.
Reno maintained that security agencies are actively working to secure the release of the abducted children and teachers and urged Nigerians to approach the situation with patience and careful reasoning.
His comments have since divided opinions, with some agreeing that security operations should remain discreet, while others believe public awareness is necessary to keep pressure on authorities and prevent victims from being forgotten.
What do you think? Does global publicity help rescue victims faster, or can it sometimes make negotiations and rescue efforts more complicated?
My Take: Kidnapping and terrorism are painful realities that affect innocent families, and emotions naturally run high whenever lives are at stake. While public awareness can draw attention to a crisis and encourage action, security operations often require strategy, intelligence, and confidentiality. The challenge is finding the right balance between keeping the public informed and avoiding actions that could unintentionally benefit criminals. What matters most is the safe return of victims and the long-term defeat of those responsible for these crimes.
