What is the most common mortgage for First time buyers?

Repayments mortgages – rather than interest-only mortgages, which mean you pay off both the capital that was lent to you and the interest accrued, in a series of monthly payments over an agreed term. Interest-only repayments are the repayments you make each month which cover only the interest accrued on the amount lent.

What should I be avoiding doing in the run up getting a mortgage secured?

The main thing to avoid is not applying for lots of credit or having lots of loans. Lenders do not like people who live beyond their means. They also do not like people who live in their overdrafts all the time. The lender wants to see you can manage your finances.

What are the first-time buyer rules?

There are no hard and fast rules, but most lenders require a 10% deposit. For instance, if the house you want to buy coast £150,000, your deposit needs to be at least £15,000 and your lender will lend you the remaining 90%. This is known as the loan-to-value (LTV) ratio. Some lenders may let you buy with a 5% deposit. The more the deposit the better. There are many options.
