A plan helps you do three things:
• Know what matters - are you trying to clear debt, save for a home, build a retirement pot, or create more breathing room each month? Defining a purpose removes guesswork and gives you motivation.
• Put your money in the right place - Short-term goals often suit simple cash savings. Longer-term goals may benefit from investing, which gives money the chance to grow and stay ahead of rising prices.
• Make progress automatically - Automation takes the pressure off. Setting up a regular transfer, even a small one, builds momentum without requiring constant effort.

Let's forget investments for a second.
Imagine you suddenly had an extra ÂŁ500 every month.
What would you actually do with it?
> Overpay the mortgage?
> Build up your savings?
> Invest it?
> Spend more on experiences?
> Put it towards your children's future?
Or… probably a mixture of all of them?
There isn't one universally "right" answer.
And that's exactly why financial advice shouldn't start with: "Here's the investment you should have." It should start with you.
• Your goals.
• Your timescales
• Your existing savings and pensions.
• Your attitude to investment risk.
• Your plans for the future

Because the best financial decision isn't necessarily the one with the highest potential return. Every investment carries risk and the values can go up as well as down.
It's the one that fits into the bigger picture of what you're actually trying to achieve with your money.
So, ask yourself what would YOU do with an extra ÂŁ500 a month?

Yes, really...
You might see an old pension from a previous employer and think:
"Why have I still got this? I should just move it into my current pension."
Sometimes consolidating pensions can make sense.
But "put everything in one place" isn't a financial strategy on its own.
Before transferring an old pension, it's important to understand exactly what you're giving up and what you're moving into.
Things such as:
> Investment choices
> Charges
> Benefits attached to the pension
> Exit penalties
> Valuable guarantees or protections
> Your overall retirement strategy
And some older pension arrangements can have benefits that shouldn't be given up without careful consideration.
So if you've just discovered an old pension statement at the back of a drawer...
Don't panic. Don't automatically transfer it.
Find out what you've actually got first.
It could be perfectly suitable where it is
Or it could be worth reviewing.
The important thing is making the decision based on your circumstances, rather than simply because having one pension pot feels tidier. As Investing can help your money grow over time, but the value of investments can go down as well as up.
Have you got an old workplace pension you've been meaning to look at?

We hear this one a lot.
But here's the thing...You don't necessarily need thousands of pounds sitting in the bank before you can start thinking about investing.
For many people, investing can be about building wealth gradually over time rather than trying to find one magical investment that suddenly makes them rich.
And time can be just as important as the amount you invest.
For example, someone investing regularly over many years has a very different starting point from someone who waits until they're approaching retirement and thinks:
"Right... I should probably do something with my money."
Of course, investing isn't the same as saving. Every investment carries risk and the values can go up as well as down.
That's why the important questions aren't simply:
"What should I invest in?"
They're things like:
> What am I investing for?
> How long can I leave the money invested?
> How much risk am I comfortable taking?
> Do I need access to the money?
> Does investing actually make sense for my circumstances?
So if you've got money sitting in cash and you've been thinking:
"I really should do something with this...
Maybe don't start with what investment should I buy?
Start with what am I trying to achieve?
That's where good financial planning begins.

It's one of those things most of us don't particularly enjoy thinking about.
But here's something worth asking yourself:
If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family know exactly what to do financially?
Not just what you own.
But:
>Your savings
>Investments
>Pensions
>Property
>Life policies
>Business interests
>Other financial arrangements
And would they know who to contact and where everything is?
Estate planning isn't simply about what happens to your money.
It can be about making things clearer and potentially reducing unnecessary stress for the people left behind.
And importantly, estate planning should be considered alongside your wider financial arrangements - not as something you think about once and forget.
You don't need to be wealthy to have an estate worth planning for.
Your home, savings, pension and investments can all form part of your financial picture.
So here's one for your to do list:
Could someone close to you find all your important financial information if they needed to?

If the answer is "I'm not actually sure"... perhaps that's the place to start.
Would your family know where everything is?

But will you?
And more importantly..
Do you actually know how much money you'll need when you stop working?
Because retirement planning isn't really about picking an age.
It's about answering questions like:
> Will your mortgage be paid off?
> Do you want to travel?
> Will you still have financial commitments to your family?
> What will your lifestyle actually cost?
> What income will you need every month?
And perhaps the biggest question of all:
How long does your money need to last?

Someone retiring at 65 could potentially have decades ahead of them...
Which means "I've got a pension" isn't quite the same as saying "I know my retirement is financially planned."

And you don't need to be approaching retirement to start thinking about it.
In fact, the earlier you understand where you are now, the more options you potentially have to change course.

So, let's make this simple.

If you could retire tomorrow, what would you actually want your retirement to look like?

More holidays? Less work? More time with family? A completely different lifestyle?

16/09/2026

Ouick question.

Do you know what your pension is actually invested in?
And I don't mean "it's with my old employer.

I mean:
What fund(s) is it invested in?
What are you paying in charges?
How has it performed?
Does it still suit your plans?
And do you even know where all your old pensions are?
If the answer to most of those is "not really", you're certainly not alone.
Many people change jobs, leave an old workplace pension behind and move on with life.

Five years later, there might be another pension. Then another.
Suddenly, you've got several pension pots doing their own thing - and no real idea whether they're working together towards the retirement you
want.

But here's the important bit: combining or switching pensions isn't automatically the right answer either.

There can be valuable benefits, guarantees, exit charges or other considerations that need to be checked first. As Investing can help your money grow over time, but the value of investments can go down as well as up.

So before you move anything, understand what you already have.
How many pension pots do you think you have? One? Two? Five? More?
It could be worth finding out.
If you'd like to understand your pension options, we're always happy to have a conversation.

Your pension could be one of your biggest financial assets — but many people have no idea where theirs is or whether it still matches their goals.

A pension review isn't about automatically making changes.

It's about understanding what you have, what your options are, and whether your current plan still works for you.

When was the last time you checked your pension?
