Murray is heading to KENYA! 🇰🇪

Dawn’s younger son (and original Junior Duker!) Murray has been selected as part of the Scotland Rugby 7s team as they head to Nairobi for the Safari 7s tournament.

If you are one of our Junior Duke schools in Africa and are travelling to Nairobi to support the tournament, give the Scotland boys a big cheer, particularly the blonde number 1! 🌟

If you get the chance to say hello to Murray, grab a picture with him and send it to us, and we will give you a level of the Junior Duke Award for FREE! 🙌

PART 2: The challenge is over and here are the results… The sound of a classroom full of learning 🙌✨

There is no better noise for a teacher than hearing collaboration among the students, working together to learn.

Together, the children of Mosshead Primary in Glasgow completed the Saving the World Junior Duke challenge, discovering the harmful effects of carbon dioxide, and the dangers of producing too much while transporting food from further afield.

Working together they were able to successfully calculate how far certain foods had come to get to their classroom and come to a conclusion that more trees are needed to tackle the issue of carbon dioxide, as well as shopping locally to reduce food miles.

Thank you to Mosshead Primary for working so hard! 👏

PART 1: Did you know that garlic can come from China, all the way to the UK? ✈️

Dawn challenged the children of Mosshead Primary School to think about where their food comes from. Dawn took her weekly shop to the school, handed it out to the children and asked them to:

🌍 Look on labels for the word 'origin'.
🔢 Use a food calculator to get distances from other countries to the UK, as well as how many kilograms of Carbon are produced by going that far by plane, car or train
➕Do the maths to see how far the food in your group's bag had travelled
💨 Discover the different gases we breathe in and which we want less of in our atmosphere
🤔 Consider what that all means for our weekly shopping choices

Come back for Part 2 to hear their discoveries!

It isn’t just a badge…🏅

On completion of every level of the Junior Duke Award, each child receives a corresponding badge. But it represents so much more than that.

A Junior Duke badge is a tangible symbol of every challenge a child has completed. Every time they’ve tried, failed and tried again; learned something new and put it into practice; or simply given it a go and discovered what they’re capable of.

And perhaps, most importantly, being presented a badge at the end-of-year presentation gives children who may not usually shine academically their moment in the spotlight.

A moment to recognise what they have achieved.
A moment to feel proud.
A moment to shine. ✨

So, if you have one, wear your Junior Duke badge with PRIDE!🏅

Can your child make their own bed like Nhiley? 🌸

By the time children reach the age of 18 and are heading off to university, they are of an age where they are expected to be able to strip and make their bed, wash and dry the sheets and be self sufficient. Sounds simple, right? But can they actually do it?

Getting in to good habits from a young age sets children up with a foundation of independence. At just 4, Nhiley is taking part in the Nano Duke award, the youngest level we have, learning to take care of herself!

She’s young AND capable! 🙌
