FIVE TIPS FOR MOVING DAY
Congratulations, you've exchanged and now you're thinking about the actual move. It can be a stressful day, especially if you're in a chain, but there's a few things you can do to make your life that much easier on the day.
1. Start organising and packing as soon as you can!
I moved house myself a few months ago. I thought I could 'leave it for a bit' and pack things at a later date after exchange. I *REALLY* wish I hadn't! If it's not an essential day-to-day item, get it in a box as soon as you can. The less you leave yourself to do in the final run up, the more you will thank yourself at the time. Take it from me!
2. Think about where your moving van is going to load and unload and communicate this to your movers or helpers on the day.
Pretty self-explanatory this one, but crucial for so many properties local to us. You don't want to pull up with a truck load of your worldly possessions, only to need to park 500 yards away or face a ticket. It's also worth checking with the parking team at your local borough, as you may be able to reserve spaces on the day of your move. The closer you can be the better. You'll be thankful for it when you've got a chest of drawers on your back.
3. Make a plan for your children and/or furry friends.
Moving is stressful enough as it is, without the kids running around under your feet as you carefully carry the delicate family heirlooms to your moving vehicle. If you can get some help with babysitting on the day, you'll find it much easier.
As for pets, try to get them out for the day or if that isn't an option, look to get them settled in first in a pet friendly space. Keep the door shut and put a big sign on the door so people know to stay out. No-one wants to see Whiskers bolting out the door of their new home, not knowing where they are.
4. It seems like a lot of work, sure, but having a big sort of before you even pack is going to help long term.
Chances are you've accrued things you really don't need, and now is your chance to decide what needs to stay and go. I did this myself and turns out I didn't need those old band t-shirts that haven’t fitted me since 2006. If you’re able to, listing things you no-longer need on eBay and FB Marketplace also gives you an opportunity to add a little bit of pocket-money to the move pot from things you weren’t moving.
5. Pack a move box for the essentials on the day.
Because no-one wants to hear ‘where’s the tea bags’, surveying 100 sealed boxes when you’re absolutely gasping.
