So what's going on in the mortgage market....?!

Donald Trump has caused havoc with the world markets with tariffs on trade. So what does this mean for mortgage rates, will rates get cheaper?

The simple answer is potentially Yes, rates could get cheaper but mortgage rates are a bit like petrol prices. When the cost of oil increases, petrol prices rise quickly but when oil drops in price, petrol prices take a lot longer to come down. Oil this week had been trading at 20% lower and we may see cheaper petrol costs in the future but this takes time to work through to the forecourt.

With mortgages, it's very similar, Swap Rates are used to price mortgage rates and this week Swap Rates on average have been 0.2% cheaper. This is because the expectation is that the Bank of England may have to drop interest rates quicker to counter the adverse effect of world wide tariffs and the threat this brings to causing a recession.
With this drop in Swap Rates lenders could drop their rates by the same 0.2% but this may take time to work through

So sit tight, let's see what the next week brings and each day can be different depending on what actions Donald Trump decides to do 🥴
