At WIUK (Whisky Investment UK), we commemorate this special day with reflection on the enduring connection between Robert Burns and Scotch whisky.
Today, the 25th of January, marks an annual tradition where enthusiasts worldwide, raise a dram of Scotch whisky 🥃 in celebration of the revered poet. But who is Mr Burns to Scotch whisky?
Robert Burns, renowned for his poetic prowess, shared a profound affection for whisky, and his verses often paid homage to the "water of life," an integral element in the fabric of Scottish literature.
In his 1785 poem titled "Scotch Drink," Burns extolled the virtues of whisky and its significance in the lives of ordinary Scots. The spirit became a symbol of resistance against the restrictions imposed by the British Government after the contentious 1784 Wash Act, which aimed to prohibit individuals like Burn's friends, particularly the Forbes family of Culloden, from distilling their famed Ferintosh whisky.
The tradition of toasting Robert Burns with a dram of whisky, now synonymous with Burns Night, has evolved into a global ritual. Originating from dinners hosted by admirers of the bard, these gatherings featured recitations of his poetry alongside traditional Scottish fare such as haggis, neeps, and tatties—all raised with a dram in honour of Robert Burns.
Ironically, in the final years of his life, Burns worked as an excise officer, responsible for collecting taxes on spirits and identifying bootleggers—those same individuals who initially brought whisky to the Scottish people. Although this role took him to various corners of Scotland, influencing his later works, Burns remained a man of the people.
In summary, Robert Burns emerges as a figure who embraced both whisky and poetry, providing yet another reason to celebrate.
