It's always a great feeling to tell someone they can retire early!

I recently went out to see a client, who wanted me to do some analysis to confirm he would have enough income retirement if he were to retire at age 67. The results shocked him, as not only was he on track, he could also retire at 63 and have enough for what he needs!

Sometimes, just a bit of reassurance can go a long way, and can actually show you what the big picture looks like.

Do you run a small business or limited company and don't have a pension?

If so, you could be missing out on some major tax breaks that are available to you. By making pension contributions from your business to yourself, you are reducing the company's profits for Corporation Tax purposes - which is an instant tax break of between 19% and 25%!

Not only that, but you have gotten money out of your business and into your own name without paying any income tax or dividend tax. Again, this is a huge tax saving.

Most company directors can save 30% or more on their overall tax position instantly, just by making a pension contribution. If it's not something you're doing, then it is definitely worth considering.

With a tax system which is constantly taking from you, it is so important that you take advantage of the allowances and efficiencies that are available to you.

The power of referrals!

After a conversation with a client recently, I was able to put him in contact with an excellent and very experienced Trust planner. They put a plan in place so that half of the client's property was protected from the local authority should they end up in long-term care. Through a simple discussion as part of the annual review, they now have so much more peace of mind that their home will not be seized to pay for care home fees if they need it!

Another added benefit of having a financial adviser on your side is the ability to spot these potential opportunities for you and making it happen.

Yesterday's work was a bit of a different one! Helping a client claim their pension early due to ill-health grounds. All done as part of the ongoing service with no additional cost to the client. Left them feeling so relieved that it had all been sorted for them!

Another fantastic result for a client!

He got in touch with me as he had no idea what pension pot he had, he just had a few bits of paperwork from various companies. From the limited information I had, we managed to piece together everything he has, which totalled around £160,000!

We're now putting a plan in place to consolidate them into one pot to make things much easier and simple for him moving forward.

There's a lot of leg-work involved in tracing down old pensions, but it can be done, and can lead to results just like this one.

"When is the right time to start to think about my pensions?"

That's a question which I hear a lot, and I'll be honest - I'm not sure what it means! Our whole working lives, we contribute to pensions, so it would be a great idea to know why we are making those contributions, and what it actually means.

Having a financial plan in place is so important so we know what we are working for, what the end-goal is, and when we can afford to actually retire!

As a financial adviser, I work with all my clients to ensure they have a plan, and that they completely understand when retirement is achievable.

Without a plan in place, retirement becomes a little bit of a shot in the dark!
