What is the Your First Home scheme?

It will offer government-backed equity loans of 20% to those buying new build homes in England, who have at least a 2.5% cash deposit towards their purchase.

The scheme is expected to work in a similar way to the previous Help to Buy equity loan programme, which ran for 10 years from 2013 until 2023.

Under Help to Buy, buyers needed a slightly bigger 5% cash deposit towards their purchase. They could then access a 20% equity loan from government, which was interest free for five years.

President Trump last week announced that his administration had reached an agreement on the release of about 13.5 million barrels of Russian diesel. However, October’s shipment of 2.3 million barrels against daily global demand of about 30 million barrels means that in the short term, this is unlikely to make a significant dent in bringing the diesel price down. While the price of US diesel futures closed $0.20 lower at $4.68/gallon on Friday, the retail price of $6.28 a gallon is almost double the $3.68 price a year ago.

Financial markets have a habit of repeating themselves. Every so often, investors become excited about a new technology or industry sector. In response, prices will often rise rapidly, drawing in more buyers and pushing asset prices higher.

These price increases may sometimes be justified. Yet, there will be occasions when there is a dislocation between prices and reasonable fundamental expectations. When this occurs, it can mean that a financial bubble has formed.

Financial bubbles have been present in financial markets for hundreds of years. The growth of railways during the Victorian era, the dot.com sector at the turn of this century, residential property in China’s main cities and cryptocurrencies all exhibited bubble-like behaviour.

The dot.com era is one of the clearest examples of what can happen. Investors rushed into technology stocks. This drove the Nasdaq index up more than sixfold before it suffered a dramatic collapse in March 2000. It took the index another 15 years to recover to its historic peak.

If bubbles follow a familiar pattern, why do they keep happening and why are so many investors caught up in them?

With less than four weeks before the chancellor John Healey stands up to give his first Budget, leaks about what might be announced have been few and far between.

The lack of rumours has also led to a notable reduction in speculation, which has been welcomed by both SJP and markets. The panic seen in previous years around potential changes to pensions for example, appears to have been largely muted.

However, in his keynote speech to the Labour Party conference in Birmingham on Tuesday, the prime minister Andy Burnham set out a pledge to offer access to free social care services to everyone in England – on which he intends to lead Labour into the next election.

September saw oil prices remain elevated, while government bond yields rose across several major economies. Higher energy prices and inflationary pressures have added to concerns around borrowing costs, with central banks taking different approaches to interest rates.

In the UK, attention is turning to the upcoming Budget, while proposed changes to the State Pension triple lock and a new scheme for first-time buyers are also in focus. Elsewhere, political uncertainty in France and rising US Treasury yields have added to pressure in bond markets.

Meanwhile, investment in artificial intelligence continues at pace, with major technology companies competing for investor attention.

Caring for a loved one, in their old age or poor health, can be hugely rewarding and millions of people across the UK provide unpaid care1.

But taking on caring responsibilities can also affect your income, savings and future financial security, particularly if you reduce your working hours or even take a break from working altogether.

When your attention is understandably focused on someone else, it can be easy to put your own needs and goals aside. Reviewing your finances and making a plan can help you stay in control while continuing to support the person you care for.

Investors saw a perfect storm this week across financial markets. This culminated in US 10-year Treasury yields reaching 5.1%, a level last seen during the global financial crisis in 2007. The 30-year Treasury yield rose even further, exceeding its level in 2004.

Government bond yields are climbing as investors demand even more compensation in response to persistent inflation pressures, a resilient economy as well as high energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Reinforcing higher US inflation pressures was a data release on the economic health and sentiment across the services and manufacturing sectors.

This showed US business activity during September accelerated to its fastest rate in over five years. While signs of a booming economy would normally be considered as positive for markets, difficulties in sourcing suitable staff and order backlogs are adding to fears of higher pressure on selling prices and therefore inflation in the months to come. This strength in the economy also suggests it is strong enough to absorb another rate hike. It also feeds into the higher for longer narrative regarding interest rates, pushing bond prices, shares and the gold price lower.
