Losing a partner is devastating, emotionally and financially. Research shows:

✔ 30% of UK adults could be forced to sell their home if their partner passed away
✔ 18% would need to take on extra work just to cope
✔ 60% of mortgage holders don’t have life insurance that covers their mortgage

It’s not something anyone wants to think about, but having the right protection in place can provide real security for the people who matter most.

Life insurance can help cover major costs like your mortgage, and when set up correctly, it can also sit outside your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.

A simple conversation today could make a huge difference tomorrow.

You don't need to have a financial problem to speak to a financial adviser.

In fact, some of the best conversations happen when things are going well.

You've had a pay rise. The business is growing. You've built up some savings. Your mortgage is manageable.

Nothing is necessarily wrong. You just want to know you're making the most of what you've worked hard to build.

That's where financial planning comes in.

At Millbank, we can help you step back and look at the bigger picture – where you are now, what you'd like the next five, ten or twenty years to look like, and whether your finances are set up to help you get there.

Sometimes the first step is simply having the conversation.

If you've been thinking, “I really should get some proper advice…”, perhaps this is your sign.

Here’s what’s making the headlines this week:
➡️ September’s growth rate marks the weakest annual pace since December 2025 and is attributed to the ongoing economic uncertainty.
➡️ The number of sub-5% fixed mortgage deals fell by 99% in September, with average fixed mortgage rates reaching their highest level in 3 years.
➡️ “Businesses across the UK are telling us they see opportunities to grow… turning this ambition into action requires public and private investment working”.

When it comes to your pension, starting earlier could make a much bigger difference than you think.

Research shows just how powerful time can be.

For illustration, assuming 7% annual growth after charges:

✔️ Starting at 20 could require contributions of around £264 a month to build a £1m pension pot by 65.
✔️ Starting at 40 could require around £1,235 a month to aim for the same amount.

That's nearly five times as much each month.

Of course, finding room for pension contributions isn't always easy, particularly when you're balancing rent or a mortgage, bills and everything else life brings.

The point isn't that you need to save huge amounts from day one. It's that time can be one of your biggest advantages.

Even smaller, regular contributions made earlier have longer to benefit from compound growth and building the habit now could reduce some of the financial pressure later in life.

So, if retirement feels too far away to think about just yet, that could be exactly why now is worth thinking about it.

What does a happy retirement look like to you?

Perhaps it's travelling more. Spending time with family. Taking up hobbies you never had time for. Staying active. Or simply having the freedom to decide how you spend your days.

Retirement planning is often talked about in terms of pensions, investments and income. Those things matter, but they're there to support something much bigger: the life you want to live.

A fulfilling retirement brings together two important things:

✔️ Wellbeing: staying active, connected and doing the things that give you purpose.
✔️ Wealth: having the financial security and sustainable income to support your lifestyle, both now and in the years ahead.

And your retirement plan shouldn't stand still. Priorities change. Spending changes. Life changes. Regularly reviewing your plans can help ensure your finances continue to support the retirement you actually want.

Because ultimately, retirement isn't just about having enough money.

It's about having a plan for what you want to do with your time, freedom and financial security.

The traditional path to homeownership is changing.

Buy your first home. Pay off the mortgage. Retire mortgage-free.

For many people, that journey no longer looks quite so straightforward.

First-time buyers are now entering the property market at around age 33 on average, while 35 and 40-year mortgage terms are increasingly being used to make monthly repayments more affordable.

The result? More homeowners could be carrying mortgage debt into their 60s and beyond.

Later life borrowing is changing too. It isn't simply about equity release. Older borrowers are using standard mortgages, remortgaging and other lending options to manage their finances, access property wealth or support their plans for retirement.

The important thing is making sure your mortgage works alongside your wider financial plan, particularly as you approach later life.

Our latest blog looks at the new shape of homeownership and what longer-term borrowing could mean for you: https://millbankfs.co.uk/2026/09/16/a-new-shape-to-homeownership/
