What does the almighty LinkedIn algorithm consider to be 'relevant and meaningful engagement'?

Comments, shares, and interactions from people in a relevant field who've understood and thought about your post.

I.e., not generic comments from random people.

❌ That's definitely not going to extend the reach of your post ❌

But how do we attract the right kind of engagement?

We'll admit that this one is less of a 'hack' and is going to take some trial and error, but here's a strategy to try:

Ask a question that coaxes an opinion or insight from your audience.

Posing the right questions position you as an industry thought leader and encourages those meaningful conversations that LinkedIn cherishes so much.

The responses you get from these questions also provide the chance to learn more about your audience's interests.

Use this information to refine and develop even more relevant content that they'll lap up.

πŸ’‘ Final tip πŸ’‘

Join the conversation yourself.

Always, always, ALWAYS respond to comments on your post.

Don't be that person who posts and ghosts, never to be seen again πŸ‘»

Not only is that off-putting for anyone who has taken the time to leave their thoughts on your content, but LinkedIn itself wants to see an active conversation play out in the comments section.

After a successful trial run last year, we're closing up shop for a week between Christmas and New Year.

This will give our staff some much-deserved downtime during this wonderful but often chaotic time of year.

We'll wrap up business for 2023 at lunchtime tomorrow, then reopen in the New Year on Tuesday 2nd January 2024.

We hope all our followers and everyone at St. James's Place have a peaceful Christmas πŸŽ„

See you on the other side!

❗ WARNING: LinkedIn doesn't want you leaving its platform!❗

So I'm sure it comes as absolutely zero surprise that its algorithm doesn't prioritise posts with links to external sites.

That's right.

Including a link to your website, blog, calendar booking, or anything else that doesn't start with LinkedIn.com, will be pushed to the bottom of the pile.

Mildly infuriating when you're using LinkedIn to promote your business.

(Trust us, we know πŸ™„)

So, how to get around this dilemma?

If you need to share an outbound link, simply pop it in the comments.

3 tips to get more eyeballs on your post in that crucial first hour after it's published:

1️⃣ Tag the relevant people and companies involved in the post
2️⃣ Use key words STRATEGICALLY (i.e. use them, but don't stuff your caption with a key term for every other word)
3️⃣ Include relevant hashtags, ideally 3-6 of them

If you're running a competition or giveaway, you can also consider using a branded hashtag.

⚠️ But don't forget that promotion can and should happen outside of LinkedIn too! ⚠️

Example #1:

Get your staff to reshare personal and company page posts.

Send it to them on a group LinkedIn or Teams chat, Slack channel, via carrier pigeon, or whatever other means of communication you use.

Example #2

If you have an especially important announcement or valuable resource to share - let's say an award win or a free educational guide - send it to your clients and prospects via email newsletter.

These are great ways to engage inactive LinkedIn members with your content.

Consequently, the extra views and engagement will improve your favour with the ever-formidable algorithm.

The best way to not only attract clients, but attract the RIGHT clients, is to have a crystal clear Unique Selling Proposition.

An impactful USP reflects not only your services but also your values, expertise, and the distinctive benefit clients can expect when they choose to work with you.

It should clearly show - in a single sentence - what you customers want and what you do well.

For a step-by-step guide on how to craft a compelling USP, check out our previous post πŸ€“

Not bothering to craft a compelling USP is a sure-fire way to get lost and blend in with all the other financial advisers.

Taking a bit of time and effort on this crucial task will help you...

πŸ‘‰ Stand out from your competitors

πŸ‘‰ Identify both strengths and weaknesses (and fix the latter!)

πŸ‘‰ Have a clear brand identity which builds top-of-mind awareness

All pretty essential stuff, I'm sure you'll agree.

On Thursday we'll share 5 examples of amazing USPs we created for hypothetical financial advisers.

But if you can't wait 'til then, you'll also find them over on our blog.

Although you'll find members of Plus Group scattered across most of the corners of the globe, there's a sizeable cluster to be found on the Spanish coast of Alicante...

So our Javea-based Chasers (minus Jill Thompson πŸ’”) finally had a meet-up after working together for 2 years!

Here's what Gillian Montieth had to say on the matter:

"We had a great evening! It was a little daunting meeting colleagues we speak to every day for the first time- we all felt a little nervous. It was great to find we have so much in common, and it brought us even closer together as a team.

Can’t wait for our Christmas shenanigans!"

Glad you had fun but send us some of that sunshine!

The biggest mistake you can make when scheduling your LinkedIn content:

Posting when no one's around.

That first hour after a post goes out is crucial.

You NEED some good engagement in those first 60 minutes to get the post pushed out beyond your immediate followers and connections.

And that simply won't happen if your audience is fast asleep, busy at work, or otherwise occupied.

Your content will vanish into thin air πŸ’¨

So how do you know when your audience is online?

This is when knowing your audience is key:

What does their daily routine consist of?

For example, posting during the busy school run times is no use if your audience consists of parents.

Other platforms like Instagram will tell you when your audience is online each day of the week, but alas LinkedIn doesn't offer this data, so it's going to take some trial and error.

But it's a worthwhile thing to crack.

You need to be posting every single day either:

LinkedIn data shows that posting just weekly leads to a 2x lift in engagement compared to posting less frequently.

Perfect for those of you just starting out on social media!

How to go from generic salesy social media posts to getting 5x your usual engagement πŸš€

As we mentioned in our LinkedIn algorithm guide last week (go download it if you missed it!), the platform now surfaces knowledge-based content that members are likely to be interested in based on their skills and interests.

That means you need to tap into the skills and interests of the target audience you're trying to reach!

It all comes back to the client personas that Mark Lamb's been talking about this week.

Make sure you understand:

What makes your audience tick?
Their hobbies?
Values?
Education?
Professional field?

But there needs to be genuine overlap with your own skills and interests to be able to speak as a credible expert on relevant experts.

And LinkedIn knows all this from your profile, so there's no hiding πŸ‘€

If you crack this, your posts on these topics are much more likely to spread beyond your followers and 1st-degree connections.

Feeling stuck?

Have a look at analytics from previous content, reflect on conversations with your clients, and maybe even take a sneaky peek at your competitors.

(You didn't hear that last part from us)

And remember that LinkedIn users have a preference for πŸ“· images πŸ“· and πŸ“½οΈ video πŸ“½οΈ

So much so that posts with images get twice as many comments as text posts, and LinkedIn videos get 5x the level of engagement!
