Because of B****T, since January 1st, 2021, The United Kingdom is no longer benefiting from European help.
If you have an English driving license and you are living in France, you will need to change it within one year of coming to France, but for now, the UK and France have not signed the reciprocal agreement that allows you to do it, therefore, you have to wait “a couple of months” in order to be able to change it…
Below is a link where you will be able to download the document to change your driving license, you can check from time to time if the documents are available …
https://www.interieur.gouv.fr/Actualites/Brexit-ce-qui-change-depuis-le-1er-janvier-2021/Permis-de-conduire
Once it is available, you will need (again) a large amount of paperwork (it is written on the site above) to complete you demand:
- The two certificates (which you cannot have for now)
- You original driving license
- Something to prove your identity (passport, identity card…)
- Something to prove where you live (a phone or EDF bill…) dated for less than three months WITH YOUR ADDRESS ON IT.
- your residency card.
- A certificate that proves you can drive.
- 1 picture of yourself. (passport size photo)
- Recent driving license information which can be downloaded here : View or share your driving licence information - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
If your car is British registered, you have 6 months max to change it to a French one, however if you are having difficulties, AXA will have it up to a year. This must be done within the first year that you are insured with us, if you do not change it, the insurance will automatically stop on the renewal of your contract.
Please note:
- If you imported your car before 31/12/2020 you will need a Quitus fiscal, you can apply for it here: https://www.impots.gouv.fr/portail/formulaire/1993-part-d/demande-de-quitus-fiscal-1993-part-d-sd
and email it to the impots.
- If you imported your car after 31/12/2020 you need to go to the nearest customs station (e.g: in St-Malo) and ask for the car to be assessed (you will pay 10% of the value of the car as tax)
You will need to provide:
-a certificate of registration or something equivalent
- the receipt if there was a sell
- if the car comes from a country which has an agreement with European community, you need a certificate of the origin.
You will need to complete two copies of https://www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/R42719
, which you should send to your local customs office by recorded delivery. A link to a directory of local offices is available on the link above.
You need to provide proof of former residence in your home country, proof of your new residence in France, the registration certificate of the vehicle and the purchase invoice.
You will be issued with a Certificat de dédouanement No 846A, which you use for registering your vehicle in France, which you must do within 4 months of obtaining the certificate.
You don’t need to supply a 'quitus fiscal'.
Once you’re done either of the above you will need to apply for your French immatriculation on the ANTS site : https://ants.gouv.fr/
or use a local garage (Norauto; Speedy; Feuvert…)
As always, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any trouble doing it on your own.
