Please be aware: I recently had an enquiry to rent my gite - once invoice sent, they claimed to have paid directly, but mistakenly paid twice, so please could I refund difference. Alarm bells immediately. The money did show in my account, but came up as a cheque, so I contacted my bank, who said to tell them they needed to ask their own bank to request a refund. In the meantime, they (subtly) changed their email address, and wrote increasingly hostile emails asking for refund. Once I told them what the bank had said, I heard nothing more. Sure enough, two large payments have been sitting in our account for nearly two weeks now, although the first has been withdrawn today, cheque refused as the account was closed due to theft. I have seen similar attempts at fraud before, so am always guarded, but it could easily be misleading once you see the money in your account. Fortunately this has cost us nothing and the bank are investigating. Please be aware - even if it looks like a clear transfer, check carefully and contact your bank if in doubt
