The Stockholm Syndrome of Touring

Touring can feel like captivity dressed up as freedom.
The road takes your sleep, your health, your family dinners. It asks for everything—and then convinces you to thank it for the privilege.

The shows, the adrenaline, the late-night laughs… they become the ransom we gladly pay.
We defend it. We rationalize it. We say, “This is the life I chose.”
But sometimes it’s not choice—it’s dependence.

The highs bind us to the very thing that breaks us.
We miss home, yet when we’re home, we miss the road.
We feel burned out, yet we sign up again.
We love it, even when it hurts us.

That’s the Stockholm Syndrome of touring:
Learning to call the cage a home.
Learning to call the exhaustion love.
Learning to fight for something that keeps taking.

And the cost isn’t abstract.
It’s high blood pressure, bad backs, hearing loss, depression, anxiety, broken marriages.
It’s no healthcare, no retirement, no safety net.
A billion-dollar industry built on people with no benefits.

Some will say, “I love it, why tear it down?”
And that’s true—there is love here. There’s beauty, connection, and meaning on the road.
But naming the cost isn’t bad-mouthing. It’s refusing to pretend the bruises aren’t real.

It matters because until we see the pattern, we can’t change it.
Because love without honesty isn’t love—it’s denial.
Because survival isn’t just about staying on the road,
it’s about knowing when to step off without losing yourself.

Awareness is the first act of freedom.
