One Islamic Bank, One Future:
Why Ethiopia’s Full‑Fledged Islamic Banks Must Unite to Survive and Thrive!
1 A New Regulatory Era: Catalysts for Change
Ethiopia’s financial landscape is undergoing its most profound transformation in decades. Over the past two years, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has unveiled a series of bold, far‑reaching reforms that are fundamentally reshaping the rules of the game for every financial institution in the country.
First, in a historic break from a long‑standing policy of protectionism, the NBE opened the sector to foreign bank entry, ending the era of a purely domestic banking industry. Foreign banks are now permitted to establish subsidiaries, bringing with them advanced technology, international best practices, and—for the first time—direct competition from well‑capitalized global players.

While this reform is designed to attract foreign investment and stabilize the macroeconomy, it also introduces new layers of currency risk and liquidity complexity for all banks—challenges that are particularly acute for institutions with limited scale and sophisticated treasury capabilities.
Third, the NBE has aggressively pushed for consolidation within the banking sector. A directive requiring all commercial banks to raise their minimum paid‑up equity capital to 5 billion ETB has placed immense pressure on smaller and newer banks. Those unable to meet the threshold on their own are effectively compelled to consider mergers, acquisitions, or strategic alliances. This is not merely a capital adequacy exercise; it is a structural reform aimed at creating fewer, stronger, and more resilient banks capable of competing in an increasingly open and demanding market...,,, read more fhttps://lnkd.in/dCgMeDg7 article
