Rolls-Royce shares jump 10% after 2023 profits more than double

Rolls-Royce, which manufactures jet engines for commercial aircraft along with power systems for ships and submarines, posted an underlying operating profit of £1.6 billion ($2 billion) in 2023, compared to £652 million in 2022.
Rolls-Royce was the top performer in Britain’s FTSE 100 in 2023, soaring over 200% on the back of a profit forecast upgrade and the announcement in November that profits could quadruple by 2027.

Nvidia reported earnings after the bell that beat Wall Street expectations for earnings and sales, and said revenue during the current quarter would be better than expected.
Nvidia has been the primary beneficiary of the recent technology industry obsession with large artificial intelligence models, which are developed on the company’s pricey graphics processors for servers.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang addressed investor fears that the company may not be able to keep up this growth or level of sales for the whole year on a call with analysts.

The markets in Asia showed a divided picture on Wednesday, after Tuesday's losses in the US, partly because Nvidia's share price drop, prior to the quarterly results tonight, led to profit-taking in the technology sector yesterday.

The stock exchange in Shanghai nevertheless rose by 2.3 percent and the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong gained 2.6 percent. However, the Nikkei fell 0.3 percent and the Kospi index in Seoul also lost 0.3 percent.

Gold at $3,000 and oil at $100 by 2025? Citi analysts don’t rule it out:
There’s an off chance that gold prices could soar to $3,000 per ounce, and oil to $100 per barrel within the next 12 to 18 months, according to Citi.
Central bank aggressive purchases, stagflation, and a global recession are catalysts that could drive the price of the yellow metal almost 50% higher, Citi analyst said.

Pound boosted after BoE's Bailey talks rate cuts.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey at a Treasury Select Committee meeting said that the UK's recession is "very weak". Bailey said that compared to recessions dating back to the 1970s, the 0.5% cumulative reduction in gross domestic product in the third and fourth quarter was "the weakest by a long way".

Bailey also signalled that inflation does not need to reach 2% before the bank starts cutting interest rates.
