In 2019, 41 percent of companies reached a Series A within eighteen to twenty-four months of their seed round. By late 2025 that was down to 23 percent, while the share taking three or more years went from 19 percent to 39 percent.

Most seed rounds are still sized against the old number. J.P. Morgan's own read is that the eighteen to twenty-four month rule of thumb "would have left some founders short."

The headline medians tell a milder story, and there is a reason they are misleading.

Before accepting the higher valuation, three questions: what revenue justifies a 2 to 3 times step-up on this price, is the premium pricing your company or your category, and what milestone does this round have to reach?

This is not an argument that smaller is always better. In capital-intensive categories, undercapitalizing kills more companies than overpricing does. The distinction is whether the number is attached to a plan.

Seed valuations hit a record 24 million post-money and Series A jumped 37 percent. Good news, mostly.

The part that gets less attention: the seed-to-Series-A step-up investors expect has compressed to about 2.6 times from 4.2 times in 2021, and only about 38 percent of seed companies now reach a Series A at all, down from roughly half.
