🌍 Thinking about moving to Spain? 🇪🇸 Whether you're coming from another European country or from outside the EU, here’s a quick guide to your residency options:
For EU/EEA Citizens🇪🇺✨
If you’re moving to Spain from an EU or EEA country, the process is simple:
✅ No visa required – You can live and work in Spain without a visa!
✅ NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) – This is your foreigner identification number, essential for work, opening a bank account, or buying property.
✅ Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión – If you plan to stay more than 3 months, you must register with the local authorities and obtain your residence certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión).
🔍Can I stay registered in my original country?
Technically, if you’re planning a short stay or split your time between countries, you may keep your original registration in your home country. However, if you're residing in Spain for more than 183 days in a year, you’ll be considered a Spanish tax resident and must register. This is crucial for legal, tax, and healthcare reasons.
For Non-EU Citizens🌏✈️
If you're moving from outside Europe, you’ll need to apply for a visa and residence permit. Here are some options:
🔹 Non-Lucrative Visa – Ideal if you want to retire or live in Spain without working. You must prove financial stability.
🔹 Work Visa – If you have a job offer in Spain, this visa allows you to live and work in the country.
🔹 Golden Visa – Invest in property (€500,000+), and you can apply for a residence permit.
🔹 Student Visa – Perfect for those planning to study in Spain. You can stay for the duration of your course.
🔹 Entrepreneur Visa – If you plan to start a business or invest in Spain, this visa allows you to reside while you build your project.
Digital Nomad Visa 🌍💻
Spain now offers a Digital Nomad Visa, perfect for remote workers who want to live in Spain while working for companies or clients outside the country.
🔹 Who is it for? – Remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who earn their income primarily from companies outside Spain.
🔹 How long can you stay? – The visa is valid for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for up to 5 years.
🔹 Income requirements – You must prove you earn at least €2,000 per month (or an equivalent amount in savings).
🔹 Tax Benefits – This visa offers favorable tax rates, with non-residents taxed at 15% for the first 4 years on income earned abroad.
Beckham Law ⚽💼
Spain’s Beckham Law is a special tax regime designed to attract foreign talent, originally named after football star David Beckham when he moved to Spain.
🔹 What is it? – This law allows highly skilled foreign workers and expatriates who move to Spain to benefit from a flat 24% income tax rat on the first €600,000 of their income.
🔹 Who is eligible? – This tax regime is available to people who move to Spain for work and haven’t been tax residents in Spain for the previous 10 years. It’s great for professionals, executives, and now digital nomads!
🔹 How long does it last? – You can benefit from this tax regime for up to 6 years. After that, standard Spanish tax rates apply.
🔹 Why is it important? – For high earners, this law can significantly reduce tax obligations, making Spain an attractive destination for work and relocation.
🔍 How long before I need to register?
If you are a non-EU citizen, you must apply for a residence permit before arriving in Spain. Once you arrive, you need to register at the local police station within 30 days of arrival. Like EU citizens, if you stay more than 183 days per year, you’ll also become a tax resident.
💡 **Tip**: After 5 years of continuous residence, you can apply for permanent residency, and after 10 years, Spanish citizenship could be an option! 🌟
