Here are some highlights from our Welcome Day, where we welcomed the BSE Class of 2026–27!

A great opportunity to look back at the beginning of this new academic journey.

On October 1, we came together at the UAB campus to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year at the Barcelona School of Economics.

The afternoon featured a welcome address by BSE Deputy Director, Professor Ada Ferrer-i-Carbonell, an academic lecture by Professor Hugo Rodríguez on “A different view of banking,” and a traditional Catalan *castellers* exhibition.

An opportunity to meet new classmates, exchange perspectives, and begin building connections within the BSE community.

Bringing economic expertise into the public debate.

BSE Director Joan Monràs recently appeared before the Economic and Finance Committee of the Parliament of Catalonia to contribute to a discussion on the outlook for the Catalan economy and the challenges and opportunities shaping its future.

The session brought together different perspectives on the economic landscape in Catalonia, with Joan Monràs appearing alongside Tatxo Benet, President of Femcat, and Jordi Gual, Professor of Economics at IESE Business School.

For BSE, contributing to conversations like this is part of a broader commitment to connecting economic knowledge and research with the questions facing institutions, policymakers and society.

Bringing academic expertise into spaces for public discussion helps ensure that evidence and economic analysis remain part of the conversation around the challenges ahead.

What stays with you after a Master’s?

For Artur Andrade, BSE has been about more than developing technical skills.

After moving from Brazil to Barcelona for the Master’s in Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets, he found expert faculty who were approachable and an academic experience that encouraged him to think critically about how economic tools can be applied to real problems.

Now, whether his next step takes him into macroeconomic research or back to the private sector, Artur leaves with a toolkit he can apply in different contexts.

Economics, community and a very Catalan tradition. 🎓💙

This year’s Welcome Day at UAB Bellaterra brought BSE students together for the Opening Lecture, with Prof. Hugo Rodríguez inviting them to explore “A different view of banking.”

And after the economics? A different kind of learning experience. 👀

The Castellers introduced our students to one of Catalonia’s most beloved traditions — and another part of what it means to study and live in Barcelona.

Does your organization have a Data Science, AI or analytics challenge to solve?

BSE is inviting companies, organizations and alumni to propose real-world projects for students in our Master’s in Data Science Methodology.
Through the Industrial Practicum, students apply advanced Data Science methods to academically challenging projects while organizations gain fresh perspectives on real problems.

After several years working as a policy adviser in the Australian Government, Aditya Lalit Khanna came to Barcelona to study Economics of Public Policy (EPP) at BSE.

He was looking for rigorous economic training combined with practical, data-driven analysis — and found it in an intensive one-year programme.
