On February 1st, 2024, Dcode EFC issued the infographic titled โ€œIs there a way out?โ€ pinning the required actions needed, from our point of view, for Egyptโ€™s economy to move in the right direction, stressing that there is no one solution, and there have to be a comprehensive set of actions taken in what we dubbed โ€œAll or Nothingโ€.

A month has passed, and already strong actions have been taken on several fronts, with the move towards a flexible exchange rate today being the most significant. The below infographic takes account of what was achieved thus far, and what is not there yet.

The current high (and dynamic) inflationary environment entails continuous changes to the cost of living, but various income groups are affected differently. Dcode EFC has recently issued its latest update to its Cost of Living Study that uncovers the inflation breakdown and overall increase in cost of living for higher income groups. Additionally, several recommendations are presented to companies in dealing with salary adjustments and/or other benefits amid still anticipated inflation shocks.

We also had the opportunity to present the main findings of the study along with our flagship Macroeconomic Outlook Report (issued in August 2023) during AmCham Egypt Committee session "Egypt's Macroeconomic Outlook and Insights on Salaries and Rewards: Preparing for 2024". We shared the stage with Mohamed Faisal Al-Nizami, Egypt Country Manager at Mercer, who provided in-depth insights and analysis into salaries and inflation developments affecting companies in Egypt and the region.

Food security has been heavily impacted by recurring shocks. The COVID-19 pandemic, Russia-Ukraine war and its economic consequences, coupled with the significant climate change implications on agricultural production have all led to rising global hunger and food insecurity. Egypt has, accordingly, been impacted with severe food inflation shocks and disruptions to global supply chains, with the government intensifying its investments to expand agricultural areas and grain storage capacity to increase self-sufficiency ratios, while tackling increasing water insecurity.
