European Maritime Finance (EMF) and the American Club welcome the new US Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal.

The event was held in Copenhagen to honor the newly appointed US Ambassador to Denmark Alan Leventhal and his wife Sherry celebrating the American Club’s 102-year anniversary, the second oldest American Club in the world.

Ambassador Leventhal was credentialed as the United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark by Her Majesty the QueenMargrethe II on July 1, 2020.

Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, Leventhal was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Capital Partners. He previously served as President and CEO of Beacon Properties Corporation, a publicly traded real estate investment company.
Leventhal is the former Chair of the Board Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation where he also served on the Executive Committee. He was an Executive Committee and life member of MIT and Trustee Emeritus of Boston University where he served as Chair from 2004 to 2008.

Leventhal was a life trustee of Northwestern University and also served on the boards of the Friends of Post Office Square and the Norman B. Leventhal Map and Educational Center at the Boston Public Library.

Representing the global shipping investment firm was Martin Haugaard, CEO of European Maritime Finance, Stephen Schueler, President of the American Club Denmark and Chairman of European Maritime Finance, and Torben Bager, Board Advisor to EMF.

Leventhal received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Northwestern University and a Master's of Business Administration from Dartmouth College. He is married to Mrs. Sherry Leventhal of New Orleans, Louisiana, and together they have six children and 12 grandchildren.

Martin Haugaard, CEO of European Maritime Finance, and Chairman Stephen Schueler welcomed the new Ambassador to Denmark.

Performing during the evening was double Grammy Award winner Mads Tolling, also participating in the Principal Ballerina of the Royal Denmark Ballet and Knighted by the Queen of Denmark, Holly Dorger.

Ambassador Leventhal talked about the importance of international trade and have a strong relationship with Denmark. European Maritime’s CEO Martin Haugaard said, “Being the sponsor of this prestigious event was in recognition of the fact that European Maritime Finance is committed to global trade, especially between Denmark and the United States. European Maritime is focused on sustainability through the most advanced fuel-efficient vessels.” Schueler, also President of the American Club Denmark noted, “we are fortunate to have Alan Leventhal as our U.S. Ambassador building on the strong foundation of the United States and Denmark’s collaboration.”

Clarksons noted in its recent weekly report that the Chinese exports have increased to a record of 1.6m units in 2021, up by 105% year-on-year. Rates are currently at an all time high of $55,000 a day for a 6,500 ceu PCTC.

Atlas Maritime is leading the initiative together with EMF. The new dual fuel LNG 7,000-ceu car/truck carriers (PCTC) newbuildings will be from China’s CIMC Raffles. The average petrol vehicle imported into the EU weighs c. 1.2 tonnes vs c. 2 tonnes for a plug-in hybrid. The electric car is therefore approximately 60%+ heavier than traditional vehicles. Our PCTC’s are strengthened and capable of carrying heavier electric vehicles.

Atlas expects to employ the vessels in the growing electric vehicle trade between China and the west.

Chinese carmakers are expanding their export volume. Tesla has plans for an additional plant capable of producing 1m cars annually.

Clarksons estimates 100 to 200 new car carriers will be needed between 2024 to 2030 to meet additional demand growth.

Tanker player diversifies into fossil-free fuel transport economy with first newbuilding — and potentially more to follow

The event was held at the Danish Shipowners’ Association head office in Copenhagen to honour Congressman Hoyer’s contribution to the Club’s 102 year history of fostering collaboration and good relations between Denmark and the United States.

Congressman Hoyer was part of a bi-partisan delegation of eight US House members and one US Senator who also visited Germany and Poland to discuss the current humanitarian and political crisis in Europe.

Representing the global shipping investment firm was Stephen Schueler, President of the American Club Denmark and Chairman of European Maritime,, Mads Sørensen, Chief Operating Officer and Torben Bager, Board Advisor. to EMF.

Mr Schueler welcomed the delegation to Copenhagen and highlighted how Congressman Hoyer, whose father was Danish, has been an important supporter of Denmark in the United States, regularly meeting with Danish Parliamentarians and government officials when visiting Washington.

Last week European Maritime Finance received the first of five sister super eco class tankers built in Daehan Shipyard in South Korea in partnership with Atlas Maritime.

The first of five new super Eco and environmentally friendly Aframax tankers.

While the conflict in Ukraine continues, the tanker market has cooled down, and the tonnage list has begun to build up again. Long-term consequences for the tanker market can be positive, as new trading routes add pressure on “ton-mile demand” .

In Drybulk the Capesizes has seen the biggest uptick in earnings. European buyers are looking down under to Australia to replace Russian coal.

The scrap market has undergone a revival.

Steel producers in India and local sellers expect an export increase to Europe, and higher steel production costs due to the conflict in Ukraine making steel and coal supplies tighter.

Russia is knowingly one of the biggest exporters of steel to European countries.

The steel exports from India are regulated by the European Union, but it is speculated if the EU will loosen their steel safeguard quotas.

Price levels from India have increased and look to remain impressive in the near future.

The current situation in Ukraine affects us all and our thoughts go to the Ukrainian people.

The situation in Ukraine has created huge uncertainty. Spot rates in the Black Sea were up 1300% in week 8, but there are close to no takers as the risk involved in sailing in the region is considered too high. Three vessels have already been shelled.

2021 has been a volatile year with the new corona variant affecting the market, while supply chain challenges caused exceptional rates in the dry cargo segment and historic highs in container freight.
