📢 Review of International Women’s Day at the Mannheim Evening Academy 🎉
Today, Zahra Deilami, Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Mannheim, opened the day of action with a historical review of key achievements for women’s rights over the last 80 years:
✅ 1958 - Equal Rights Act: women were finally allowed to work without their husband’s consent.
✅ 1977 - Reform of marriage and family law: the obligation to run a household was abolished and women were given full professional freedom.
1997 - Marital r**e becomes a criminal offense: A long overdue step for the protection of women.
✅ 2015 - Women’s quota for companies: At least 30% women on supervisory boards of large companies.
✅ 2016 - “No means no” law: Clear legal action against sexual assault.
Susanne Deß, Managing Director of the Abendakademie, emphasizes the role of the Abendakademie as an open meeting place for discussing socially relevant topics.
🔹 Inspiring workshops included discussions on networking & elevator pitching with Karin Brückner - how women can strategically position themselves in the world of work.
🔹 A particularly insightful and philosophical lecture dealt with “Between autonomy and connectedness - what does self-determination mean today?” with Sophia Disson.
🔹 The topic “Why is feminism also a men’s issue?”, presented by Simon Kumleben, also brought exciting insights: Many everyday disadvantages for women - from unisex workwear - to AI-based discrimination and the often gender-unspecific evaluation of medical studies - were highlighted.
An enlightening, inspiring day with lots of new ideas. Thanks to everyone involved! 💜
