Today’s collector’s question for Cooper: 🐾

Since when have official certificates been issued for the Krugerrand? 🪙

This question is especially relevant for raw Krugerrands.

The key date is 1995. Older Krugerrands were generally not issued with an official certificate, so if one is missing, that is usually completely normal and not a sign that the coin is incomplete.

From 1995 onward, official certificates became part of the original issue format for Proof Krugerrands. 📜

That distinction matters mainly when a coin is still offered in its original raw form. In that case, the presence or absence of the original certificate can make a real difference in how complete and convincing the piece appears to collectors. 🔍

For graded Krugerrands, the situation is different. Once a coin is encapsulated by NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, PCGS or CAC Grading, the certified grade usually becomes the main point of reference in the market. In that context, the original COA is generally no longer viewed in the same way as with a raw coin.

So the basic rule is quite simple:

Older raw Krugerrands without a certificate are usually perfectly normal

Later raw Proof Krugerrands should be checked more carefully for their original COA

For graded coins, the certified grade usually matters more than the original certificate

A small detail, but an important one for collectors. ✨
