🚢 Vessel of the Month: CSOV

As offshore wind projects scale up, so does the demand for more capable support vessels. Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) are becoming a key asset for construction, commissioning, and long-term operations across larger offshore wind developments.

Understanding vessel capability and market timing is becoming increasingly important as the next phase of offshore wind build-out accelerates.

Taiwan contributed 12% of all new offshore wind capacity added globally in 2024.

For context that puts it third in the world. Behind only the UK and China.

Two years on, the pipeline has only grown stronger.

This video breaks down how Taiwan got here, what's driving the demand, and whether the growth is sustainable given rising construction costs and global market headwinds.

For GRS Group, Taiwan is not just a headline. It is an active market we have been working in for years, placing specialist vessels for installation, survey, and O&M operations across the Taiwan Strait.

France just delivered first power from its first floating offshore wind farm.

EFGL’s 30 MW, 3 turbines on floating foundations, 16 km off Port-La Nouvelle in the Mediterranean. Now fully operational with 20+ workers in maintenance and monitoring.

This is a milestone for French offshore wind but the more significant number is what comes next.

A 250 MW follow-on project ‘’Éoliennes Flottantes d'Occitanie’’ has already been awarded to the same developer. That's nearly 10× the scale of EFGL.

France's floating wind pipeline is real and it is growing. The vessel planning conversation needs to start now.

A major milestone for the UK’s offshore wind sector: the first turbine at East Anglia THREE is now in place.

As one of the world’s largest offshore wind developments, projects at this scale continue to highlight the growing complexity of vessel strategy, installation sequencing, and supply chain coordination required to deliver next-generation renewable infrastructure.

Why it matters:
• Large-scale project ex*****on is accelerating across Europe
• Installation campaigns continue to drive demand for specialist offshore vessels
• Turbine scale and project size are reshaping logistics, chartering, and infrastructure planning

From first foundations to turbine installation, each milestone reinforces how offshore wind delivery depends on precise marine ex*****on as much as energy ambition.

At GRS Group, we continue to track the vessel markets, project developments, and offshore logistics shaping the future of renewables.

The world's largest floating wind turbine is now being installed.

16 MW. 252-metre rotor. Deep waters off Yangjiang, China. Installation began on 25 April 2026.

For vessel markets, this is significant.

Turbines at this scale push beyond the lift and handling capacity of most current installation vessels. As floating wind moves from pilot projects toward commercial scale with a global pipeline of 56 GW by 2040 demand for next generation specialist installation and O&M vessels will follow.

The technology is moving fast. Vessel planning needs to keep pace.

Most people know offshore wind turbines exist.

Far fewer know what it takes to keep them running.

The technicians maintaining these turbines don't commute to work. They live offshore sometimes for 2 to 4 weeks at a time on specialist vessels designed to be their home, workshop, and lifeline, all at once.

This gives a rare look at what that life actually looks like.

For GRS Group, the vessels that make this possible, Service Operation Vessels, Walk-to-Work ships, and Crew Transfer Vessels are at the heart of what we do every day.

Matching the right vessel to the right project isn't just a logistics decision. It directly affects the safety, wellbeing, and productivity of every person working offshore.
