Standard filters effectively capture particles, but they do not deactivate microorganisms. As a result, bacteria and fungi can colonize filter surfaces, form biofilm, and generate unpleasant odors, particularly in humid environments found in vehicles, hotels, schools, and hospitals.

INTERMERCATUS BioTech Inc. is developing a solution that combines particle capture with active microbial reduction. GOAF , based on fibers with chemically immobilized oxide, can reduce bacterial and fungal viability by ≥2 log within 24 hours, corresponding to a ≥99% reduction.

Safety is fundamental. The graphene oxide is permanently bound within a polymer composite on fibers such as PP, PET, and PVDF, preventing nanoparticle release while maintaining minimal impact on . This creates a durable and scalable solution ready for commercial applications.
