Handshape Project _ Wall of Unification

There are moments in life when we reach out our hand without wondering whether the person is a friend or a stranger. That is because we are all humans and fundamentally the same. Handshape was born from this, from a longing to build bridges, not walls. It is a symbol of our collective aspiration for a better world, the world we want to live in.

Handshape is about stepping out of your comfort zone and opening up to someone new. By sharing stories, we discover how much we have in common. To capture this moment, two people form a Handshape together by pressing their hands into soft clay during a friendly handshake.

Meike realized this project in 2019 over te course of one year together with project partner Ivan Gabor and wonderful team.

On 9 November, for the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, two large art installations Walls of Unification where exhibited. Each installation held approx. 5,000 handshapes. The final goal was to make 10.957 handshapes, one for each day since 9.11.98. One was placed inside the memorial building, and an outdoor pavilion allowed passersby to experience and add their own handshape.

This Monument to Human Connection could be visited for over 3 years inside the Berlin Wall Memorial.
The project brought together people from all backgrounds across all 12 Berlin districts, visiting markets, festivals, parks, schools, stations, exhibitions, and more. Each Handshape was archived online, allowing participants to revisit their manifest with a stranger.

Wall to Table Ritual Act

On November 9, a symbolic date marking 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the two massive wall parts, each weighing 7 tons, were slowly pushed over to fall into a massive 7.5-meter-long table. This powerful act was accompanied by a raw and emotional performance by two individuals, expressing the journey from fear, judgment, and separation to connection and understanding. Their movements mirrored the walls we construct in our minds—walls built from fear and resistance to the unfamiliar—revealing the deep loneliness that arises from division and the universal human longing for closeness and empathy.

This newly created table serves as an open invitation to Berlin’s community and visitors to come together, share stories, and confront both personal and societal barriers. By merging symbolic action with artistic expression, the installation invites exploration of diverse perspectives and encourages openness in a world increasingly defined by polarization.

From March to July, the Berlin Wall Table will be on display at the Berlin Wall Memorial Lapidarium. During this period, a vibrant program of open discussions, cultural performances, and interactive “peace dating” sessions will provide opportunities for meaningful dialogue and creative exchange. Wall To Table

CREATUAL CONCEPT

The ‘Berlin-Wall Table’ is an art installation that transforms two original Berlin Wall segments into a monumental table. The two L-shaped objects are tilted towards each other. Both ends touch and rest onto a central wooden pillar, the structure symbolizes balance and connection.
Visitors are invited to bring their own chairs and step onto a stage built beneath the towering 2-meter-high table. Here, they can sit across from strangers and engage in open, meaningful conversations.

“Table of Hope” is more than an installation; it is a living, breathing entity designed to provoke dialogue and reflection. By constructing a communal table, Ziegler creates a symbolic space for confronting difficult conversations, both personal and collective. The installation’s guiding philosophy is clear: “We must come together, share our lives, and truly listen.”

The project is dynamic and continually evolving, with each iteration carrying forward the ‘baton of hope’ to a new community. The first table, created in South Africa in 2014, remains a focal point for dialogue at the District Six Museum. In Ghana, the second table was ceremoniously hosted by King Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III at the King’s Palace. The third table, recently established in Lagos at Freedom Park, a former colonial prison, continues this legacy. The journey is set to continue in Rwanda.

The “Heartbeat Fountain” stands as a testament to the power of collective human energy and the transforma- tive potential of art. It serves as a poetic reminder of Flevoland’s unique landscape and its ongoing dialogue with the water that surrounds it. By weaving together the personal and the communal, the installation not only beautified the landscape but also deepened the bonds within the community, highlighting the power of art to connect, inspire, and elevate.
