Hello traders!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Today, WTI has risen by more than 6% to $92.22 per barrel, while Brent has increased by 4.6% to $94.65. The cause of this spike was the new U.S. strikes against Iran, which heightened concerns about prolonged disruptions in energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

๐Ÿ‘‰ President Trump stated that the attacks were a response to Iran's attempts to lay mines in the strait and to Tehran's earlier attack on a military base in Jordan. This occurred after a highly alarming episode late Monday night, when two oil supertankers were struck by shells while attempting to navigate out of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned of "severe punishment" for the U.S. retaliatory strike. At the same time, Trump noted that Iran's response could provoke much more powerful military actions, and the country could be "completely wiped off the face of the Earth."

๐Ÿ‘‰ The European gas market has become the most vulnerable in this situation, with the situation nearing critical levels. The region has only one month left to replenish gas reserves before winter, and the storage facilities are filled to about 65%, the lowest seasonal level recorded since monitoring began in 2009. The European gas benchmark is currently more than 70% above the levels at the beginning of July. It's worth noting that Isabel Schnabel of the European Central Bank highlighted gas as a source of particular concern, emphasizing that low reserves could worsen the situation during a cold winter.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Notably, despite the severity of the situation, price growth remains limited, and there is a concrete explanation for this. Exports continue through Hormuz, often on tankers with transponders turned off to avoid detection, and producers in the Persian Gulf, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, continue to export barrel after barrel.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Washington's position regarding the strait is becoming increasingly provocative. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has downplayed the significance of Hormuz, stating that it will soon be circumvented by pipelines and become a "useless chunk of water." This rhetoric comes amid growing concerns that the war is depleting U.S. firepower and is becoming increasingly unpopular domestically, raising questions about the sustainability of the entire campaign.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Regarding the current technical picture of oil, buyers need to conquer the nearest resistance at $92.50. This will allow them to target $96.54, above which it will be quite challenging to break through. The farthest target will be around $100.40. In the event of a decline in oil prices, bears will attempt to take control of $89.54. If they succeed, breaking this range will deal a serious blow to the bulls' positions and could push oil down to a low of $87.08, with the potential to reach $84.40.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The US Department of the Treasury, led by Scott Bessent, announced plans to launch a buyback program for longโ€‘term Treasury bonds starting September 9, aiming to restrain borrowing costs after yields surged to a 19โ€‘year high. However, as the Financial Times reports, direct interventions by the Treasury could undermine investor confidence and materially complicate the Federal Reserveโ€™s efforts to combat inflation.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The policies of the two financial institutions are effectively pulling in opposite directions. Treasury bond purchases are intended to lower mortgage and lending rates to stimulate business activity. Federal Reserve leadership seeks to cool demand in order to return inflation to the 2% target, and in July three members of the FOMC already voted for a policy rate increase. Moreover, attempts by Bessent to manually adjust sovereign bond prices conflict with the stance of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who has urged reliance on market signals and objective macroeconomic data.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Experts point to rising institutional risks. Evercore ISI vice chairman Krishna Guha said market participants and regulators are concerned by the Treasuryโ€™s rhetoric, and Harvard professor Jason Furman warned of the danger of fiscal dominance, a situation in which an independent monetary policy is sacrificed to meet the governmentโ€™s needs to service rising public debt.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole strengthened the US dollar, although traders initially tried to buy risk assets aggressively. The dollar rose because the key takeaway from his remarks was more hawkish than markets had expected. According to Warsh, the Fed's dominant focus should now remain on prices, and he is not convinced that the summer improvement in inflation data reflects a genuine turning point in the trend.

๐Ÿ‘‰ His assessment of the economy was especially telling. Warsh said he was impressed by the broader data, which in his view has strengthened, and he offered specific arguments. Business capital spending is rising rapidly: annual growth in investment in equipment and intangible assets was about 9%, the highest since 2021, and more than half of that increase this year can be attributed to the build-out of AI infrastructure. Earnings at S&P 500 companies rose more than 20% over the year, while margins exceeded historical levels. That is the foundation of the key conclusion that makes the speech hawkish.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Warsh said credit markets are showing few signs that policy is restraining activity, adding that apart from certain sectors such as housing and agriculture, where strains are visible, it would be difficult to characterize broader financial conditions as restrictive. As noted earlier, that is the same argument used by hawks within the Fed, including Jeff Schmid, and it also appeared in the ECB's July minutes.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Warsh's methodology for measuring inflation is also worth noting because it explains his skepticism. The 12-month change in the PCE index stands at 3.7%, while the six-month figure is 4.1%. To assess the underlying trend, he breaks down 199 individual components of the index: over the past 12 months, 54% of goods and services in the basket posted price growth above 3%, well below the post-pandemic peak of about 77% but materially above the 32% norm that prevailed in the two decades before the pandemic. Over the past six months, the figure was 49%. In other words, price pressure remains broad rather than isolated.

๐Ÿ‘‰ His assessment of employment was far calmer. Warsh described the 4.1% unemployment rate as low by historical standards and called the four-week average of jobless claims an empirically reliable real-time indicator, one that remains close to multi-decade lows. He explained weak payroll growth in structural terms: when labor supply is barely growing, monthly job growth will naturally be low. The implication is clear: in his view the labor market is consistent with full employment, which means there is no labor market justification for easier policy.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The institutional part of the speech also deserves attention because Warsh effectively buried the practice of forward guidance. Introducing the structure of his remarks, he joked that it could be called a plan or a road map, but not forward guidance. He said transparency in communicating future decisions is not a virtue in itself, and that the use of forward guidance, introduced during the financial crisis, has outlived its usefulness. He described the risk of mutual dependence between the central bank and markets as a hall-of-mirrors problem: if markets rely too heavily on Fed guidance and the Fed relies on market prices, all parties become more blind to new developments and more prone to mistakes.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The climax of the speech was a direct acknowledgment of responsibility. Warsh said there is one signal no one can miss: responsibility for 65 months of persistently elevated inflation lies squarely with the central bank. He then set out his condition for further action: the Fed must be confident that underlying inflation is moving toward the target clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, there is still work to do.

๐Ÿ‘‰ As noted above, the dollar responded by strengthening against risk assets, because there is no basis for a dovish narrative in the near term.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The current technical picture for EUR/USD suggests that buyers now need to think about taking the 1.1598 level. Only that will allow a target a test of 1.1620. From there it will be possible to reach 1.1639, but doing so without support from large players will be difficult. On the downside, I expect any serious buying to be only around 1.1572. If there are no buyers there, it will be better to wait for a fresh low at 1.1554 or to open long positions from 1.1534.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The current technical picture for GBP/USD shows that pound buyers need to take the nearest resistance level of 1.3551. Only that will allow a move toward 1.3574, above which further progress will be difficult. The farther target is the 1.3596 area. On a decline, bears will attempt to seize control of 1.3527. If they succeed, a break of the range will inflict a serious blow to bulls and push GBP/USD toward a low of 1.3502 with the prospect of extending to 1.3475.

The GBP/USD currency pair also showed confident growth over the past week, primarily thanks to the U.S. Treasury. The decision made by the Treasury was aimed at lowering yields on long-term bonds, but this has not been fully achieved yet. Many experts believe it will not be. However, for the U.S. dollar, this was a significant blow. The key factor is not the increase in long Treasury purchases, but the very act of raising the alarm by the Treasury. The American economy always needs borrowed capital, and naturally, the lower the cost of servicing debt, the better. Currently, the rates on 10-year and 30-year Treasuries have hit their highest levels in nearly 20 years. The burden on the federal budget is growing, and the national debt is rising, even though Donald Trump seemingly promised very different outcomes. But who cares what Trump promised two years ago? Joe Biden is to blame for everything.

However, it should be noted that the U.S. Treasury's decision was not the only factor influencing the dollar's decline. For more than a month, we have observed that the GBP/USD pair is in a long-term sideways channel. As soon as the lower boundary was tested, we began forecasting a rise to the upper boundary. After two months of movement, there are still about 80-100 pips left to reach the upper limit. Should we continue to expect a decline in the British currency? In our opinion, no. Firstly, a flat market is not a life sentence. It will eventually end, even on the weekly timeframe. Secondly, what growth factors remain for the dollar? We asked ourselves this question two months ago when there was a risk that the price would break out of the sideways channel at its lower boundary. Now the situation has worsened even further. At that time, the market believed in a tightening of Federal Reserve monetary policy and anticipated that geopolitics would support the U.S. currency for some time. At the same time, the Treasury had not yet sounded the alarm. Accordingly, the price breaking through the upper boundary of the sideways channel at 1.3150-1.3780 is much more viable.

Regarding the fundamentals of the British pound, it was reported last week that the inflation rate rose to 2.9%, slightly increasing the likelihood of a tightening of monetary policy by the Bank of England, which is not subject to directives from Trump. If inflation continues to rise, the BoE may actually raise the key interest rate. Unlike the Fed, which is being attacked from all sides, inflation in the U.S. is decreasing, the labor market is convulsing once again, and Trump is calling for a reduction in the key rate as the national debt rises. Under such conditions, we believe the Fed will likely sacrifice inflation rather than the economy or the labor market.

Thus, the British pound has everything it needs to continue moving north. And the U.S. dollar has no other path but to fall. Of course, this will not be a one-sided movement. From time to time, the dollar will correct in both the short and long term. And it has been doing just that for the past four years.

The average volatility of the GBP/USD pair over the past 5 trading days stands at 61 pips. For the GBP/USD pair, this figure is considered "average." On Monday, August 24, we expect movement within the range bounded by levels 1.3581 and 1.3703. The higher linear regression channel has shifted upward, indicating an uptrend. The CCI indicator has entered the overbought area for the third time, once again warning of a potential correction.

The GBP/USD currency pair maintains its upward trend. Trump's policies will continue to exert pressure on the U.S. economy, so we do not expect long-term growth in the U.S. dollar. So far, 2026 has been super-positive for the dollar due to geopolitical factors, but every tale has an end. On the weekly timeframe, a flat market persists between 1.3150 and 1.3780, within the framework of a four-year upward trend, allowing for continued growth of the British currency in the medium term. Long positions with targets at 1.3672 and 1.3703 can be considered when the price is above the moving average. If the price is below the moving average line, it allows for short positions with targets at 1.3489 and 1.3428.

Linear regression channels help determine the current trend. If both are directed in the same direction, the trend is currently strong;

The moving average line (settings 20,0, smoothed) defines the short-term trend and the direction in which trading should currently be conducted;

Murray levels are target levels for movements and corrections;

Volatility levels (red lines) indicate the probable price channel in which the pair will operate over the next day based on current volatility readings;

The CCI indicator entering the oversold area (below -250) or the overbought area (above +250) indicates that a trend reversal in the opposite direction is approaching.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Donald Trump is facing a lawsuit over an attempt to monetize the speed of his posts. The Intercept and the nonโ€‘profit Freedom of the Press Foundation have gone to court seeking to block a new service from Trump Media & Technology Group, calling it โ€œextraordinary and corrupt.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ The dispute centers on the launch of a premium service called Truth API. For $60โ€“100,000 a month, the subscription delivers messages from popular Truth Social accounts several milliseconds earlier than regular users. The company explicitly highlighted the toolโ€™s financial benefit in marketing materials, showing clients ten presidential posts that had triggered sharp market swings. Trump remains the largest shareholder in Trump Media: his roughly $1 billion stake is held in a trust managed by Donald Trump Jr.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The initiative has irritated Wall Street, where subโ€‘second advantages are critical for highโ€‘frequency trading algorithms. Hedgeโ€‘fund managers interviewed by journalists call the service a blatant abuse of power, though they admit they may be forced to buy subscriptions because of their fiduciary duties to clients.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Lawyers are already questioning the business modelโ€™s legality. Former White House ethics adviser Richard Painter warned investors of the risks of buying Truth API without guarantees that official government decisions will not be leaked in advance through the service. Duke University law professor James Cox emphasized that the president has no right to commercialize information he produces in the course of performing his official duties.

โ€ข Oil prices are increasing for the fourth day in a row, and there are no signs of progress in resolving the Iran-U.S. conflict after nearly six months of war. Brent is approaching $92 per barrel, while WTI is nearing $86.

โ€ข The diplomatic stalemate has become the main driver of this increase. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that no negotiations with Tehran are taking place, as the status of the Strait of Hormuz remains disputed. According to him, in the absence of negotiations, the U.S. intends to increase economic pressure on Iran to force Tehran to capitulate while maintaining the blockade of Iranian ports. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that a package of new stringent measures might be announced this week.

โ€ข The actual shipping situation confirms the seriousness of the circumstances. Visible movement along the waterway connecting Gulf producers with global markets remains low. On Tuesday, the UK reported that a vessel leaving the strait was hit by a projectile, resulting in one casualty. On Wednesday, tracking data recorded that two China-linked supertankers turned back, choosing not to risk passing through the strait.

โ€ข The most dramatic situation lies not within oil itself but in oil products. Global diesel fuel markets are experiencing a particularly tense period: supplies from the Middle East are disrupted, and Moscow has halted exports. In the U.S., the margin for producing diesel from crude oil exceeded $100 per barrel, reaching a record high. In Europe, gasoil prices have risen alongside oil, with futures up 0.7% to $1,308 per ton. This is why prices for oil products, especially diesel, have risen much more sharply than for oil itself, intensifying pressure on drivers, truckers, farmers, and the industrial sector. In other words, the market is gradually shifting from trading news to trading real shortages.

โ€ข A significant political signal was the United Arab Emirates' decision to suspend all trade and financial operations with Tehran in light of what they termed regional escalation. The UAE, located across the Persian Gulf from Iran, often becomes a target for attacks, particularly on shipping, and this move reflects both increased tensions and an attempt to distance itself from the Iranian economy amid U.S. sanctions.

โ€ข Data on inventories support arguments for further price growth. The American Petroleum Institute reported yesterday a modest decline in national crude oil stocks, including at the Cushing Hub in Cushing, Oklahoma. Distillate stocks, which include diesel fuel, are also decreasing. Official data is expected to be published today.

โ€ข Regarding the current technical picture for oil, buyers need to break through the nearest resistance at $86.60. This will allow targeting $89.60, above which it will be quite difficult to break through. The farthest target will be around $92.56. In the event of a decline, bears will attempt to take control at $84.40. If successful, breaking the range will deal a serious blow to bullish positions, pushing oil down to a low of $81.50 and potentially reaching $78.70.
