Cyprus has moved closer to becoming a natural gas producer after approving the development plan for the Kronos gas field in Block 6 of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), offshore southwest of the island in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Kronos field was discovered in 2022 and is estimated to contain around 3.4 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, making it one of the country’s most significant offshore discoveries. After several years of exploration, appraisal drilling and negotiations, Cyprus now aims to begin commercial gas exports in 2028.

Global investment giant Blackstone has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Greek e-commerce platform Skroutz from CVC Capital Partners in a deal valued at € 635 million.

Founded in 2005 as a price-comparison website, Skroutz has grown into Greece’s leading online marketplace, serving millions of users and thousands of merchants while expanding into Cyprus, Romania, and Bulgaria.

The acquisition is an important moment not only for Skroutz, but for the wider Greek startup ecosystem.

The European Investment Fund (EIF), part of the European Investment Bank Group, has announced a new investment in the SPOROS Platform, an initiative designed to accelerate the shift toward a circular economy in Greece and surrounding regions.

SPOROS has successfully raised € 58 million, reaching its final close under the Sustainability and Social Impact Window of the Equifund II programme. The fund is co-financed by the European Union through the 2021–2027 National Strategic Reference Framework and the Competitiveness Programme.

Greece is accelerating its offshore gas exploration programme, linking upstream resource development with its ambition to become a regional energy hub.

On 16 February 2026, the Government of Greece signed exploration contracts with a consortium led by Chevron covering four offshore blocks south of the Peloponnese and Crete, with a total area of approximately 47,000 sq km.

This marks the first time Greece is implementing modern, large-scale hydrocarbon exploration across its maritime borders.
