How to prepare for Solar Shopping
Aqualectra Mikuenta account allows you to download your last 12 months of energy use, this file also gives you your average daily energy usage. The average daily energy usage will be the number of kWh's your solar panels needs to produce to meet your daily energy demand (Pagatinu users will have to keep track of their daily energy usage in a spreadsheet).
On average, a household starts their daily high energy consumption around 6:00-7:00pm till 7:00-8:00am, the rest of the day it's what is called ALWAYS ON, appliances that normally are not turned OFF like the refrigerator. Your solar installer can provide you with a temporary 24/7 monitoring device, to register your energy use behavior, taking into account this changes depending on the months of the year that are cooler.
A system sized (solar panels and battery storage) based on your average numbers extracted from the Mikuanta report, will bring your energy usage from Aqualectra to approximately 10-20% (not every day is a sunny day), it all depends on the location your solar panels are installed, and if you have limited to no shading taking place, this can be due to trees and/or building structures close to the solar production installation.
Curaçao electricity grid 127/220Volt, complicates the possibility of getting an out-of-the-box Solar Battery Storage solution on the market, and installers has to design the system to meet the 127/220Volt and/or changes needs to be made to your breaker box. What solution to go for, it all depends on your peak energy usage (maximum Watt during a short period of time), what would be the best fit for your home.
On average, all households of Curaçao can switch to solar renewable energy storage due to the amount of sunny days we have, systems does not need to be over dimensioned while your Aqualectra bill can stay in check. And such an investment needs to be seen as a long term and not a quick ROI (Return On Investment) what most people hopes for.
Our pilot projects with batteries during the last 10 years (first with lead acid deep cycle and later Lithium (LFP)) has proven that with the current systems designs, Curaçao can switch to Solar Distributed Energy Resources (DER) for the home.
