Why I Left the Clock Behind: Escaping Burnout in Costa Rica
In the U.S., life was always about more. More work, more goals, more stress. I was constantly checking the clock, chasing deadlines, and holding myself to standards that left no room for peace. There was a silent pressure to perform—not just financially, but socially, emotionally, and even physically.

When I first came to Costa Rica, I expected peace to come instantly. But it didn’t. I brought that stress with me. And when people here would say Pura Vida—a phrase that means “pure life”—I honestly didn’t understand it. It felt like an excuse for things not getting done. But over time, I realized I was wrong.

Pura Vida is a lifestyle. It’s an unspoken agreement that everything will be okay—that life doesn’t need to be controlled to be meaningful. It means hello, thank you, you’re welcome, and I’m doing great… but mostly, it means: slow down.
