PLASTIC WASTE/ POLLUTION
Plastic waste is the accumulation of synthetic plastic products in the environment to the point that they adversely affects wildlife and their habitats as well as for human populations.
It also refers to the significant amount of plastic that isn’t recycled and ends up in landfill or, thrown into unregulated dump sites. In Cameroon, for example, over 7 million tons of plastic is consumed each year-and yet only 30 percent of it is recycled
Plastic is a polymeric material(i.e., a material whose molecules are very large) often resembling long chains made up of a seemingly endless series of interconnected links.
Today, however, the average consumer comes into daily contact with all kinds of plastic materials that have been developed specifically to defeat natural decay processes. many lightweight single-use plastic products and packaging materials, which account for approximately 50 percent of all plastics produced, are not deposited in containers for subsequent removal to landfills, recycling centers, or incinerators.
Instead, they are improperly disposed of or near the location where they end their usefulness to the consumer. Dropped on the ground, thrown out of a car window, heaped onto an already full trash bin, or inadvertently carried off by a gust of wind, they immediately begin to pollute the environment.
The 70% that isn’t recycled is sent back into the environment, polluting our oceans and causing damage to our ecosystem. In African countries, the majority of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, meaning that marine animals are especially at risk.
So much of what we consume is made of plastic (such as bottles, containers) because it’s inexpensive, yet durable. However, plastic is slow to degrade taking us 400+ years due to its chemical structure, which presents a huge challenge. Between 4.8 million metric tons and 12.7 million metric tons are discarded into the ocean annually, especially ocean coastline countries.
Reducing plastic consumption and raising awareness about plastic recycling is crucial if we are to overcome the problem of plastic waste and pollution on our planet
According to the trade association Plastics Europe. worldwide plastic production grown to between 4.8 million and 12.7 million metric tons (5.3 million and 14 million short tons) are discarded into the oceans annually by countries with ocean coastlines.
Although the possibility of buying bottled water is simple and convenient for you, think about the impact on the environment. Take care of the environment and the future of our children.
