Plastic Water Bottle Pollution Facts

A million plastic bottles are purchased across the word every minute of the day, and the worrying fact is that the number is growing and it will grow as much as 25% by the end of this year. Worst still 94% of plastic bottles used aren’t recycled and end up in landfills across our planet, sitting there and taking about 450 years to decompose and 1000 years to biodegrade. Plastic bottles that don’t end up in landfills end up polluting the ocean, destroying our environment, injuring and killing marine organisms.

✔️How long does it take for a plastic bottle to decompose?
The average time for a plastic bottle to completely decompose is about 450 years. Some plastics take longer than others to degrade, for some bottles it can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. 90% of all plastic bottles don’t even get recycled!

✔️How many plastic bottles are used each day?
Around 7 million plastic bottles end up in landfills every single day, and Cameroon alone (being a 16th most populated country in Africa) send more than 1 billion water bottles to landfills every year, the equivalent of 17 million gallons of oil (enough energy to fuel more than 1 million Cameroon cars and light trucks for a year). That means that 200 plastic bottles are thrown away every second of the day

PLASTIC WASTE/ POLLUTION

Plastic waste is the accumulation of synthetic plastic products in the environment to the point that they adversely affects wildlife and their habitats as well as for human populations.
It also refers to the significant amount of plastic that isn’t recycled and ends up in landfill or, thrown into unregulated dump sites. In Cameroon, for example, over 7 million tons of plastic is consumed each year-and yet only 30 percent of it is recycled
Plastic is a polymeric material(i.e., a material whose molecules are very large) often resembling long chains made up of a seemingly endless series of interconnected links.

 Today, however, the average consumer comes into daily contact with all kinds of plastic materials that have been developed specifically to defeat natural decay processes. many lightweight single-use plastic products and packaging materials, which account for approximately 50 percent of all plastics produced, are not deposited in containers for subsequent removal to landfills, recycling centers, or incinerators.

 Instead, they are improperly disposed of or near the location where they end their usefulness to the consumer. Dropped on the ground, thrown out of a car window, heaped onto an already full trash bin, or inadvertently carried off by a gust of wind, they immediately begin to pollute the environment.

 The 70% that isn’t recycled is sent back into the environment, polluting our oceans and causing damage to our ecosystem. In African countries, the majority of plastic waste ends up in the oceans, meaning that marine animals are especially at risk.

 So much of what we consume is made of plastic (such as bottles, containers) because it’s inexpensive, yet durable. However, plastic is slow to degrade taking us 400+ years due to its chemical structure, which presents a huge challenge. Between 4.8 million metric tons and 12.7 million metric tons are discarded into the ocean annually, especially ocean coastline countries.

 Reducing plastic consumption and raising awareness about plastic recycling is crucial if we are to overcome the problem of plastic waste and pollution on our planet

According to the trade association Plastics Europe. worldwide plastic production grown to between 4.8 million and 12.7 million metric tons (5.3 million and 14 million short tons) are discarded into the oceans annually by countries with ocean coastlines.

Although the possibility of buying bottled water is simple and convenient for you, think about the impact on the environment. Take care of the environment and the future of our children.

Waste Management

Waste Management can be defined as all the activities that are required to manage waste from the point of collecting the waste to recycling and monitoring ( source: toolshero.com)

For some weeks now while doing some rounds in the city of Douala,
I noticed a lot, i don't know if it's usual or it really has never caught my attention.

I maybe wrong , but i plead for your indulgence because my opinions may not marry (contradict) yours.

During a usual town patrol for business I noticed that our waste is poorly being managed 'well who doesn't know that'. but what got me worked up are the upcoming waste management start-ups i see all over the place, carrying them-selves as waste managers ( my opinion), when what they actually do is to collect waste from domiciles to the municipal dump stands.

To the best of my knowledge waste management ( check definition at the top), is a chain reaction which involves collecting, transportation, sorting, processing, recycling and least waste disposal.

This process should not be altered if you have to, then you no longer fall into the waste management league.

We all are hoping for a cleaner Cameroon and Yet we do the practices of old. Change begins with taking responsibility and that is by doing what you say you will do.

This is a call to action to you the individual generating the waste: sort out your waste for easy pickup for easy direction to the right sources. Lets start from there then Our City will have a Future

Cheers
To a cleaner city

Dispose Responsibly

We are been thought to put the blame on other's by society.

We know society didn't teach you to dump irresponsibly, if not the MWS, will not have bins lined up out there for use.

All i asked for is a clean city, what about you?.

We know we can do better!

What are you doing for a clean city?

*ACTION*

I'm disciplining myself to always use the right bins when/where available.

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Our environment is under threat.

Natural resources our being exhausted and we all don't see it as a wake up call

Our water bodies are flooded with human waste. We are causing a nuisance to the next generation.

Clean up now and save the planet.

Waste Solution
Taking responsibility of your waste

There have been several definitions of waste proposed in recent years. One common thread among these definitions is the concept that waste is a material that is unwanted by its producer.
Many people are unaware of the benefit of the waste they generate, to the supply chain a lot of people are eager to have their waste disposed of so quietly that they don’t even think for a second how this waste can benefit them or put our environment in harm’s way. Well even the people that know how profitable this is for them, but have difficulties because most at times they don’t know how.

Today I present to you the knowledge needed to conveniently make your waste beneficial to your environment.

for example, a newspaper that has been read, a package that has been opened and emptied of its contents or an apple eaten to the core are all similar insofar as they have lost their original inherent value from the consumers perspective.
However, the material may have value from the perspective of someone else – the newspaper can be used as an input at a pulp and paper plant or the apple can be used by a composting facility. – thus, a waste services provider may divert such a material from the waste stream. Value is reintroduced to the material through a process that treats the material in such a way as to enable it to be reintroduced back into the market place as a valuable good. For example, the newspaper may be collected and taken to a Material Recycling Facility (MRF) where it is sorted from other items, bundled and compacted – thus preparing it in such a fashion that it is marketable (valuable) to a buyer such as a pulp and paper mill.
Good for everyone, right?
Stay with me.
Paper recycling process: Step by step

• step 1: collection
• step 2: sorting and transportation
• step 3: shredding and pulping
• step 4: flotation tank/ DE-inking
• step 5: drying and finishing for usage

The whole recycling process for newspaper takes about 7 days, and studies suggest that paper can be recycled approximately 7 times before losing its integrity.
Almost all paper types can be recycled, including magazines, corrugated cardboard, printer paper, packaging papers, newspaper, cardboard dairy and juice cartons, unsolicited direct mail, phone books, and more.
