My mum told me that if I dropped out of university to start a business she wouldn't talk to me again... she wasn't joking.

we didn't speak properly for 2 years until she realised this business stuff was paying me enough to cover my bills

I've never held a grudge about this because back then I knew she was standing in my way BECAUSE she loved me.

She'd struggled in business after we moved here from Africa, so she was scared I would struggle like she did.

I think at some level i work hard to avoid the struggle I saw her endure

The truth for all of us (especially for 1st generation immigrant families):

The people who love you the most will sometimes give you some of the worst life advice… and not because they don't care…. but maybe because they care a little too much…

They'll optimise for your comfort - the thing they probably didn’t have - and not for the growth the comes from risk and struggle.

So you have to ask people who've been where you're going, not people who are where you're from.

And ultimately it's your life, you have to face the consequences, so it has to be your decision…
