There are regions in the world that are geographically more vulnerable to climate change, but the data shows that they are also the ones who are less-prepared to deal with its effects as they are often uninsured and have lower coping mechanisms. In 2017, damages from natural disasters were covered to 46% in developed countries versus only around 10% in less-developed countries, widening the initial gap of who bears the consequences.

World records of high temperatures keep getting broken, with 2018 having been one of the hottest years measured. But not everyone is affected the same. Climate models indicate that climate vulnerability will be higher in many of the world's poorer countries causing an additional 100 million people to fall back into poverty by 2030 and 143 million to migrate away from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America.

On the road to... Georgia!

BlueOrchard regularly organizes field trips to provide investors with a better understanding of the impact investing sector as well as the microfinance value chain. The last field trip took place in Georgia at the beginning of June. Georgia boasts a business friendly environment, accounting for one of the highest GDP growth rates in the region. However, unemployment and poverty levels remain high and a large share of the population is still lacking access to formal financial services.
