Fraud prevention can no longer depend on what happened yesterday. As scams, mule networks, account takeover, authorised-payment fraud and insider abuse become faster and harder to distinguish from legitimate activity, banks need to recognise suspicious behaviour before it becomes a confirmed loss.

In Payments Afrika, Khurram Ahmed explains why fraud management must become predictive in 2026. He outlines how real-time visibility, behavioural intelligence, link analysis, AI/ML scoring and governed automation can help financial institutions detect risk across customers, devices, accounts, transactions and internal access patterns while the payment or session is still active.

The discussion will cover optimising authorisation, payment routing and retries, alongside modern authentication, passkeys, tokenisation and risk-based payment journeys.

False declines are becoming a hidden profit killer for South African banks. When legitimate card transactions are blocked by outdated fraud detection and authorisation systems, banks lose revenue, customers lose trust and the real cost often remains invisible.

In ITWeb, Khurram Ahmed explains why false declines should be treated as an infrastructure issue, not only a fraud management problem. Legacy, rules-based systems can mistake normal spending for suspicious behaviour, while modern real-time decisioning and behavioural risk scoring help banks protect transactions, reduce unnecessary declines and understand the revenue impact of what they block.

Legacy payments infrastructure can look economical because it has already been depreciated. But when every change requires scarce specialists, manual reconciliation, bespoke workarounds and slower product delivery, the real cost is often much higher than the maintenance invoice.

In The Fintech Times, Julian Farley explains why payments modernisation has become an economic decision for European banks. He looks at the hidden costs of legacy platforms, from outages and false declines to fraud leakage and lost innovation capacity, and outlines why modular, API-led, real-time platforms can help banks modernise without disruption, reduce operational drag and build a stronger foundation for issuing, acquiring, fraud management and digital banking.

BPC is pleased to participate in Finnovex Saudi Arabia 2026, taking place on 2–3 September 2026 at InterContinental Riyadh by IHG, as a Silver Sponsor.

Aligned with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 transformation agenda, the summit brings together regulators, banks, fintechs, sovereign institutions and technology leaders to discuss the next phase of Saudi Arabia’s digital finance ecosystem, from instant payments and digital wallets to open banking, embedded finance, cybersecurity and AI-driven compliance.

On 2 September at 09:50am, Ali Nanji and Alexis Haessler will share the stage to present “One Platform, One Picture: Why Fragmentation Is a Control Problem.”, discussing why fragmented issuing, acquiring and switching environments limit real-time control, increase operating complexity and make regulatory questions harder to answer.
