If your hens suddenly lay fewer eggs, it usually means they’re stressed or something changed in their environment. Here are the most common causes:

RTL layer chickens are NOT ideal for breeding.
They are raised and selected for egg production only, not for reproduction or genetic breeding.

Here’s why:

🥚 Why RTL Layers Shouldn’t Be Used for Breeding
🔹 1. They are commercial hybrids
Most RTL layers (Hy-Line, Lohmann, ISA Brown, etc.) are crossbreeds produced by parent and grandparent breeding lines owned by hatcheries.

If you breed them:

The chicks will not inherit the same performance

Egg production will usually be much lower

Chicks may be weak or inconsistent

Hybrid performance cannot be replicated at the farm level.

🔹 2. RTL hens are not selected for fertility
They are selected for:

High egg production

Feed efficiency

Calm temperament

They are not bred for reproduction traits, such as:

Fertility rate

Hatchability

Strong chick vigor

🔹 3. You would also need true breeding roosters
A random or backyard rooster will produce:

Unpredictable genetics

Poor productivity chicks

Higher mortality and weak layers

Commercial breeding requires:

Controlled bloodlines

👉 Buy RTL pullets from a reputable hatchery every cycle

You need:

Pure or parent breeding stock

Proper breeder housing

Separate male-to-female ratio (1 rooster : 8–10 hens)
