🤖 AI Boom Could Drive Up Healthcare Costs

The rapid growth of AI data centers is creating huge demand for memory chips—and that could have a ripple effect on healthcare.

Memory chip prices have reportedly quadrupled over the past year, creating supply concerns for medical device manufacturers. The shortage could potentially affect the cost and availability of medical equipment, including MRI machines and other advanced devices.

As AI continues to expand, healthcare providers may face another unexpected challenge: securing the technology needed to deliver patient care.

No Surprises Act Update

🚨 Important Healthcare Update for Consumers & Providers

A federal appeals court has ruled against parts of the government’s methodology for calculating the Qualifying Payment Amount (QPA) under the No Surprises Act.

The QPA is used as a benchmark when determining payments for certain out-of-network services. The 5th Circuit Court found that the government improperly allowed insurers to include certain “ghost rates” in QPA calculations and excluded some bonus and incentive payments.

💡 Why does this matter?
The ruling could result in higher payments to out-of-network providers in some disputes. Over time, changes in provider reimbursement can also have an impact on insurance costs and premiums.

This is an important development, but the ruling does not mean your insurance coverage is changing immediately.

📈 Alignment Health Plans to Expand

Medicare Advantage insurer Alignment Health is preparing to expand into new markets and make strategic acquisitions.

The company says it may acquire healthcare delivery groups, provider-sponsored Medicare Advantage plans, and other risk-bearing healthcare assets in targeted markets.

Alignment also has access to a $200 million credit facility that could help fund permitted acquisitions over the next three years.

As Medicare Advantage continues to evolve, changes like these could affect competition, plan choices, and healthcare networks in the markets where Alignment operates.

💉 Diabetes Supplies & Medicare: Part B vs. Part D

Many diabetes supplies are covered under Medicare Part B, but some commonly used items are exceptions.

Two examples that may fall under Part D instead of Part B:

• Insulin pen needles and syringes
• Disposable, tubeless insulin pump systems, such as the Omnipod® Tubeless Insulin Pump System

When prescribed by a physician and coverage requirements are met, these items may be covered by a Medicare Part D drug plan.

🔎 Why can this be confusing?

Because these products may fall under Part D:
• They may not appear in Medicare.gov's DME section.
• They may not show up in the standard Medicare.gov drug search because some are devices or hardware.
• Coverage and cost-sharing depend on the individual Part D plan and its formulary.

👉 Bottom line: When reviewing Medicare coverage with clients who use insulin, don't assume every diabetes-related supply is covered under Part B. Check the specific plan's coverage and formulary.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a new clinical trial to study whether semaglutide (a GLP-1 medication) can help treat alcohol use disorder (AUD).

More than 400,000 Veterans have been diagnosed with AUD, and early research suggests GLP-1 medications may reduce alcohol cravings by affecting the brain's reward system.

If successful, the study could open a new approach to treating alcohol addiction. More info can be found on the VA website or https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41781010/
