When thinking of the concept for this amazing welcome dinner for MMF’s Voices of the Homeland, we really dove into what it means to lose a language, and what it takes to bring it back.
I think the work MMF Michif Language - La Lawng: Michif Peekishkwewin is doing is truly fascinating, and there’s a personal side to this for me too. Our three kids have the chance to speak English, Punjabi and French, and we see how easily English takes over the other two. My husband and I are constantly thinking of ways to keep French and Punjabi prominent in their lives, and even with that intention, it’s a challenge. It makes me think about how much harder it becomes when there are fewer people able to pass a language on, and how important the people fighting for it really are.
For the design, I kept coming back to this idea of light. Guests would walk into a darker, moody room, and the custom LED poles would slowly light up. The idea being that the more people speak, learn and share the language, the brighter it becomes, carrying the history and traditions along with it.
When we don’t use it, that light becomes dim.
For this night, it was important to celebrate the language, the culture, and what its future could look like. Something meaningful, but also modern and full of life. Such a special way to kick off the conference.
