We have two gorgeous options for our wreath fundraiser this year!

Our live wreaths and Centerpieces are made from sustainable, Canadian-sourced greens, not a single tree is cut down in production, they are trimmed to protect the fire guards of our local forests and leave trees to grow for future generations.

One of our participants in The Rent Guarantee Program shared their experience with the challenges of attaining housing and how it can happen to any of us despite our background or education.

How has the Rent Guarantee Program helped me? It’s basically been without hyperbole life-saving.

I know my story isn’t unique, but despite having multiple degrees and over a decade of professional work experience, I became homeless following the pandemic. First, I had to rely on friends/family for temporary accommodation but eventually, I became homeless and I was for all intents and purposes living in the atrium at St. Boniface. This wasn’t due to anything I did or lack of trying to secure employment- it just happens. It was an incredibly eye opening experience because like so many, I never in a million years thought it would happen to me.

I can’t find the words to explain what housing insecurity is like-it’s like living in a constant state of shame, fear and really pure terror. The toll it takes on your mental and physical health is immense and makes doing even basic things feel like climbing Mt. Everest.

While I was finally able to secure financial assistance, the issue was securing housing. Due to my rental history, I simply couldn’t secure housing without a guarantor and I couldn’t turn to family and friends again because they already had given me so much.

Thankfully, I was able to find a rental agency I developed a good relationship with via short term rentals and they were happy to accept the Program as a Guarantor and I’ve been living in my new apartment for the past 4 months. I’ve ensured my payments are early and I’m hopeful I won’t require a guarantor when the lease is set for renewal in the fall.

Right now, I’m doing everything I can to return to independency, but admittedly, the shame/fear I experienced while being homeless still takes a toll on me. I will say this: this experience has made me even more empathetic and understanding of others and their challenges. In turn, I hope/expect that I’ll be able to pay it forward and become a donor to the Program myself. It’s worth giving someone another chance and hope for the future.

“With Realize Fund I, we aim to invest in a way that accelerates social equity in Canada and builds the social finance market,” says Alexandra Baillie, Realize Capital Partners’ board chair. “We recognize this is an ambitious goal. Inequity is pervasive and deeply rooted, with many complex, often interconnected, causes. To make meaningful progress towards realizing social equity, we need an investment approach as multifaceted as the problem. We need to invest in initiatives that tackle inequity from different perspectives and positively reinforce one another to strengthen individual, community and environmental outcomes. Our first set of investments positions us to begin to do that.

The Social Finance Fund is an innovative and first of its kind program. Through this Fund, the Government of Canada is investing in, and supporting the growth of, a vibrant social finance market,” shares Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development. “By investing in the Social Finance Fund, we are enabling social innovators to succeed, as they lead the way in building a more prosperous and inclusive economy that works for all Canadians. This set of investments by Realize Capital Partners is integral to making positive impacts for Canadians and local communities.”
