🚸 Reminder: 30 km/h school zones are back in effect.
With school starting back up in the coming days, these areas will be busy with children walking, biking, and crossing streets they haven't used all summer. A few seconds saved on the road isn't worth what could happen if you're not paying attention.
So ease off the gas, keep your eyes up, and watch for those 30 km/h signs. Beyond the safety risk, speeding through a school zone can also land you a hefty fine, so there's no upside to rushing.
Let's get everyone where they're going safely this year.

πŸŽ’ Back-to-School Tips for Working Parents πŸŽ’
Summer is winding down, and with it comes the return of school schedules, homework, sports, and everything in between. For working parents, keeping up with it all while staying connected to your kids can feel like a lot.

Here are a few tips to help make the transition smoother:
✏️ Make being involved a priority
You can't make it to everything and that's okay. Pick a few events you CAN commit to, tell your kids you'll be there, and follow through. Consistency matters more than perfection.
✏️ Say "yes", but not to everything
You don't have to chair every committee. Choose one or two things that matter most to you and your kids, and commit fully to those.
✏️ Connect daily
Even small moments count helping with homework, bedtime chats, or a weekly one-on-one activity. Keeping the lines of communication open lets your kids know they can come to you.
✏️ Invest in your interests too
Don't lose yourself in the shuffle. Taking time for your own goals and well-being helps you show up better for your family.

The bottom line: Every parent at pickup, practice, or the PTA meeting is juggling the same things you are. Be kind to yourself, and remember it's the small, consistent moments that matter most to your kids.
Wishing all our Crossroads families a smooth and happy start to the school year!

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

August 26th is all about celebrating our furry best friends! Whether they're couch potatoes, backyard zoomie champions, or the official greeter of the office, dogs make everything better.

At Crossroads Insurance, we're proud to be a dog-friendly team (some of us may or may not have paw prints on our desks ). So today, we're giving a shoutout to every good boy and girl out there!

Drop a photo of your pup in the comments; we want to see them!

Fun fact: Did you know your home insurance policy may include liability coverage if your dog is involved in an incident, like a bite or an accident? Coverage and limits vary, so if you're not sure what's covered (or if your pup needs a little extra protection with increased liability limits), we're happy to walk you through it.

From our pack to yours, Happy National Dog Day!

β˜” 5 Reasons You Might Need Umbrella Insurance β˜”

Think your home and auto insurance have you fully covered? Think again. Umbrella insurance is extra liability protection that kicks in when a claim is excluded from your policy or when you've maxed out your limits. Here's why it matters:

1️⃣ Protection above your policy limits
A major injury or lawsuit can quickly exceed your home or auto liability limits. Umbrella insurance adds an extra layer so you're not paying the difference out of pocket.

2️⃣ Covers libel & slander
Home and auto policies typically don't cover false statements that damage someone's reputation (spoken or written). If you're active on social media or in the public eye, this matters more than you think. Note: this is personal coverage, not business coverage. If you're a business owner, or your "personal brand" (think influencers, content creators, consultants) IS your business, you'll want to talk to us about cyber and business liability coverage instead; umbrella insurance won't fill that gap.

3️⃣ Wrongful arrest coverage
Umbrella insurance can cover legal and defense costs for wrongful arrest, detention, or malicious prosecution.

4️⃣ Shields your assets
Big lawsuits go after your current assets AND future earnings. Umbrella coverage helps you avoid liquidating what you've built including protection for rental properties and situations your home policy might not cover (like dog bites or a guest causing an accident).

5️⃣ Covers pain & suffering
Umbrella insurance extends "bodily injury" to include psychological damages β€” something standard policies leave out, and claims here can run into the hundreds of thousands.

Umbrella insurance won't cover your property just your liability. But it fills the gaps at a surprisingly reasonable cost.

Curious if umbrella insurance is right for you? Let's talk coverage and cost.

πŸ”— Your Business Is Only As Secure As Your Weakest Vendor πŸ”—

Think your cybersecurity is solid?
Even the strongest defenses can be compromised through a third party. Every vendor in your supply chain is a potential entry point for cyber attackers.

Did you know?
πŸ”Έ Many businesses don't fully know who their vendors or their vendors' vendors actually are
πŸ”Έ Cloud service providers aren't automatically responsible for a breach on their end
πŸ”Έ A strong contract with a vendor doesn't guarantee YOU'RE off the hook if they're breached

How to protect your business:
βœ… Audit your supply chain; know where your data lives and who has access
βœ… Set cybersecurity standards and require all partners to follow them
βœ… Vet new partners with cybersecurity questionnaires and keep re-checking, not just once
βœ… Continuously monitor vendor networks for vulnerabilities
βœ… Build a crisis management plan and disaster recovery strategy BEFORE you need one

Here's the reality: cyber liability insurance won't stop an attack but it can limit your losses, cover legal fees, and speed up your recovery. And if your business gets hit with fallout from a vendor's cyberattack, contingent business interruption insurance can help protect you too.

A chain is Only as strong as its weakest link. Don't let your supply chain be the one that breaks.
Let's review your cyber coverage and make sure the gaps in your supply chain aren't gaps in your protection.

⚑ Don't Let These Lightning Myths Put You at Risk ⚑
Thunderstorms in the forecast? Before you head outside, let's bust some dangerous myths because what you don't know CAN hurt you.

❌ MYTH: Lightning never strikes the same place twice.
βœ… FACT: Toronto's CN Tower gets struck 75-80 times a year!
❌ MYTH: Trees offer decent shelter.
βœ… FACT: Standing under a tree is one of the worst places to be.
❌ MYTH: You're safe if it's not raining where you are.
βœ… FACT: Lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a storm.
❌ MYTH: Lie down flat if you're caught outside.
βœ… FACT: More body contact with the ground = higher risk. Crouch instead, feet together.

Stay Safe Outside:
βœ”οΈ Use the 30-30 rule: count to 30 after seeing lightning , if thunder hits before then, get inside and stay in for 30 min after the last rumble
βœ”οΈ Spread out from groups
βœ”οΈ Avoid open vehicles, tall or open structures

Stay Safe Inside (yes, indoors matters too, 1/3 of injuries happen there!):
βœ”οΈ Avoid water, corded phones & electronics
βœ”οΈ Stay away from windows, doors & porches
βœ”οΈ Steer clear of concrete floors/walls (metal wiring inside can conduct electricity)

When thunder roars, go indoors!
Stay safe out there, Manitoba!

No Oven, No Pizzas: Why Equipment Breakdown Insurance Matters

Think your commercial property insurance has your equipment covered? Not always. Here's the gap most business owners don't realize exists.

The difference:
Commercial property insurance covers damage from external perils β€” fire, storms, vandalism, theft. But it does NOT cover equipment that simply breaks down or malfunctions.
That's where equipment breakdown insurance comes in.

What it covers:
βœ… The cost to repair or replace malfunctioning equipment or machinery
βœ… Lost income and property damage resulting from that downed equipment

A real-world example:
A freezer in a grocery store or food warehouse stops working. Here's how coverage plays out depending on the cause:
πŸ”₯ Fire damages it β†’ covered by commercial property insurance
🌊 Flood damages it β†’ NOT covered (unless you have separate flood insurance)
⚑ A power surge blows the compressor β†’ covered by equipment breakdown insurance

Same freezer, same damage but very different coverage outcomes.

What's typically included:
βœ”οΈ Mechanically driven equipment (motors, pumps, generators, ovens, cash registers)
βœ”οΈ Technology (computers, phones, security & fire alarm systems)
βœ”οΈ Electrical systems & power surge damage
βœ”οΈ HVAC, refrigeration & air control systems
βœ”οΈ Boilers and related equipment
βœ”οΈ Damage from operator error

What's usually excluded:
❌ Normal wear and tear
❌ Age-related breakdowns
❌ Damage from rust, mold, or pests
❌ Failure to maintain equipment (some insurers may even require maintenance records)
Whether you run a manufacturing plant or a pizza shop, if your business depends on equipment to operate, this coverage matters. We can help you compare your equipment inventory to policy details and build the right protection for your risk profile.

Let's talk about what equipment breakdown insurance could mean for your business.
