What is Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP)

Source: CRA

An RRSP is a retirement savings plan that you establish, that we register, and to which you or your spouse or common-law partner contribute. Deductible RRSP contributions can be used to reduce your tax.

Any income you earn in the RRSP is usually exempt from tax as long as the funds remain in the plan. You generally have to pay tax when you receive payments from the plan.

Critical Illness : Why Protect Ourselves Now

We can't let ourselves be just a number. We have to prepare ourselves because our family needs us.

This stage of my life has made me feel in awe and grateful that I learn ways to protect me and my family and have done so through training and attending classes.

It started by just attending classes.

When I was new in Canada - - just two or three months in Canada a decade ago - - I would sit down during lunch or break when there's an ongoing presentation at TD Canada Trust at their branch at the Exchange District. I just wanted to get busy and not sit down idly during lunch time or before my work begins, so I attended classes.

That sparked my interest in learning and learning and learning and learning. That wasn't enough. I needed to learn some more and I still continue to learn.

I knew that if no one prompted me to protect myself, I would not have attended those classes and have valued how important that has been.

We can tell you about things you need to know.

We can sit down and find ways so we are not just going to be a number. We need to protect ourselves.

Critical Illness: Top Concerning Issues

Not long ago I was waiting for my child at swimming class and had a chat with one of the moms waiting for her own child.

While watching our little ones, she shared the story of a woman in her 40s who passed away just within a month that she found out she had cancer.

Within a month. From the time she found out about the lump and until her demise.

This scared me.

It's scared me to think that it could happen to me.

The lady is my age and has children with almost the same age as mine. That lady could be ME.

Her family was faced with financial challenges during this period and the mom at the pool said, she wished that there was some support and she could have been insured.

A Critical Illness protection helps you and your family when faced with major medical issues.

Some of the challenges include:
1. Loss of Income
2. Out of Pocket Expenses (source: Ivari.ca)

Loss of Income
You will be forced to go on leave from work to seek medical treatment. What if your work is your only source of income? What if you're a single parent? Is Employment Income enough? The bills will not stop coming while you're trying to get better. The children will continue to go to school, have their lunch prepared. The groceries will not come magically from thin air.

Where will you get this to support your family?

Out of Pocket Expenses
You're lucky if you have savings. But what kind of savings a family look like amidst Canadian inflation. In time, this will all be gone.

This is where Critical Illness coverage comes in.

We need to ensure we are protected.

If you spend $180 on car insurance, why not pay premium to protect your loved ones in case of medical crisis in the family.

Let's talk about options.
You can protect your family by taking action.

An Elderly Woman with $3 Dollars for Gas

This is a story about the good deed of a police officer. But I want to view this on a different perspective.

Reading through the story, the lady in cane walked painstakingly to the counter to pay for 3 dollars for gas. A police officer came to rescue her with $20 dollars more of gas, knowing she will run out of fuel in no time.

The lady then pointed out that she only got $3 after paying a lot of bills left behind when husband passed away.

This is the future that we hope we can help WE ALL AVOID.

Let's prepare for our golden years so we don't have to go through this. The old lady is admirable and strong. But could we all have the same strength and resilience? Why get there if we can help it.

Let's talk.

"An elderly woman came into my station today and gave me $3 in change to put on her gas pump. A police officer was standing behind her and happened to hear the amount and saw she was using a cane, struggling to walk back to her car. He went outside and told her to sit in the car as he would pump the gas for her. After a few minutes of getting to know one another he realized she was really struggling and didn’t have any gas or money left. The $3 will only get her so far. He told her to hang tight- came inside and put her another $20 out of his pocket. He went back and finished pumping and she told him her husband had recently passed away and she’s stuck paying all their bills and is behind every month. This $20 really helped her! She would of most likely ended up running out of gas. Nowadays there’s so much negativity towards police officers. No one respects them. We hear all the complaints and “bad” stories. I’m not saying every officer is perfect, I’m sure some are at fault at times. We all make mistakes- but we should all respect, appreciate, and thank them for what they do. Leaving your family everyday to try and make sure everyone’s else’s is safe can be tough. Think about it- who do you call when you’re in danger? Who’s running in harms way as you’re running away? To all the men and women in blue I THANK YOU for your service!"

Financial Freedom and Protection: How It has become Affordable to YOU

Back in the Philippines, discussion of financial freedom and protection did not normally take place. It's something we don't discuss among ourselves.

The concept was so NEW when I first heard it from a colleague during a training. In fact, so new, I could not understand everything they said. I first heard about this working as a Collection Officer at Commercial Credit Adjusters in June 2015, my third job. (My two other jobs at that time were Ipsos and NRG before getting in to Great West Life).

Yes, I was one of those representatives calling clients who could not pay their bills. I loved this job. I got great training. And it was during the training when I heard about protecting yourself and your family. Well, it was simply put in two words. L### I######xx.

Because I was never used to any discussion about it before, I did not see the importance of how you will protect yourself. Sure, I heard it a couple of times. A cousin of mine pride herself of insurance protection from Philamlife and this lady runs a loan company and a friend of mine also said she got one - - both were more savings than most people I knew. Mayaman, ika nga. But I can count in my one hand, the people I know who got protection.

You know things based on what you do. In my case, I was a researcher in the Philippines working for a program fighting violence against women and children. I know more women who sought protection against domestic violence than ones looking for life insurance protection.

In Canada, this is the first thing your cousin will tell you, your mom will tell you. It is so because you can afford it. The peace of mind that you can allocate a few dollars more and it's worth every penny.

I am glad, I know about it now
I am glad I talk about it now.
I am glad, I belong to a group that talk about it in hopes to get family that peace of mind knowing there will be a brighter future.
